We have one on our property and I have found that the deer traveling through it will cross at the narrowest section between woodlots. Look on google earth for these spots to set up down wind.

They will also cross in depressions or low spots, ditches.

Best advise on hunting clearcuts is above. Shortest distance between two points is a straight line, especially if it is overgrown with brush. That is what you need to really focus on.

Love 'em. Some of the first places I hunted years ago were over big fields and/or cutovers. Had to learn at an early age about using binocs, staying alert and noticing those little movements - ear flickers, horizontal lines in a vertical plant world, something moving that wasn't there before.
That's great advice, too, about the narrow spots or pinch points. I always tried to watch more carefully any depressions, ditches or creeks, even small ones.

It will take a while to learn what to look for and how hard it is to see them but you can't ask for a better morning spot. If there is a hill get where u can see a eastern facing slope and they will glow in early morning sunlight. Get high and then go 10' higher. ^This. It's amazing to sit in a cutover with someone that doesn't have experience hunting them and see how they don't even see the deer until you point them out. Once you learn how they look in the middle of it they'll stick out better.
If voting made any difference, they wouldn’t let us do it.-Mark Twain

Good some good binos. When you are scanning the cutover, dont look for the entire deer. Look for pieces of deer. Look for a ear, tail, head and then you will find the entire deer. Some good advice been given already. All of my biggest bucks have come off of cutovers on frosty mornings.

saw over 30 deer in the cutovers I hunted this past holiday week. we took six deer off it with in 3 days. one of them was a nice sized 8-point. I love cutovers. love sitting at the highest point in a fold up chair on a south end looking north in a north wind. got spots that I can drive up to and not have to worry about scent or movement too much.

It has been planted in pines but they are small. It's at least 100 acres. Everything is about waist high. A 100 acre clear cut is nothing but a 100 acre green field. After a clear cut harvest, sunlight is able to reach the forest floor creating a smorgasbord of quality food for deer to eat. Also, earlier in the season, consider hunting the SMZ's (Streamside Management Zones) SMZ's are part of most harvesting plans and are designed to protect water quality. SMZ's are usually flagged on both sides of a running stream of water with 35' from the center of the stream as a minimum. Deer travel these corridors and feed on acorns from the protected trees. The clear cut pictured in this thread has a good example of an SMZ.
