Do you guys REALLY think there are no 'small', or 'young' bucks killed in the Midwest????
TV is gonna be the demise of hunting for sheer enjoyment.
Heck, if a guy is happy with killing an 80" 8pt.... I am happy for them!!!!! This ^^^^^

Y'all are fooling yourselves on thinking that AL can compete with the Midwest on the quality of antlers. It takes a lot more than age to grow true trophy-class antlers!!!!
BUT, it is a very important part! true on average Danny, but Alabamas weight record is a staggering 365 pounds on a 60's Pickens Co buck. And the non-typical record is a monsterous 256 B&C inches... don't sell our POTENTIAL too short.... The cause for that potential is now covered in pine trees instead of soybeans......don't you think?

I think if you cut all the pines and planted soy beans then you would have good potential for 150+ deer all the time like in the MW in those certain areas. Body weights would go up definitely and antlers would follow. The way it is now though, most places in Alabama, if a deer hits 130 at age 5 he's an above average deer. When you get into the 150's and up, it's just freaks of nature here. That's just the way it is and I couldn't be convinced any other way. Our soil, what grows in it and lack of cold winters causing lower body weights says it all to me.

notice I said POTENTIAL....it's still there if the age and nutrition are given.

Thanks guys for all the comments, well most of them. Lol.
The hunt in itself is different things, to different people.
For those wondering why I didn't shoot him? I didn't shoot him for a number of reasons. Here are a few.
A. I shoot a longbow, and was hunting with a rifle that day. A rifle just doesn't "crank my tractor" shooting deer. I use a rifle to thin the doe population. B. Though there is a greater percentage of me never seeing him again rather than seeing him, I'd rather my daughter shoot him. C. This is property I have worked on, and managed since I was old enough to walk. I'm sure I actually crawled on a lot of the ground. D. Although he may not get much bigger if he makes it next year, he sure isn't going to get any bigger if I shoot him now. E. I got him on film, and basically, though it's not 100%, he would have been a dead deer, if, I had chose to shoot him. etc. etc.
Just having the opportunity to see him was a Blessing. But how many of you have actually watched a big deer and how they react to their environment? There is a lot to be learned. You can't learn much with him dead on the ground. Much like some of you have learned by not shooting the first deer that comes out, you often get to see more deer and bigger deer.
Regardless, it is one of the biggest deer I have seen on the property, for any good length of time. Definitely bigger than anything I have taken on the property. He increased a lot in mass, from last year, I'd like to see what he can do for the next.
God Bless, David B.

Ding. Winner. Yep, so trigger control, got it. Now what for nutrition? Unending funds to feed them out of a trough? MOST of the soil in Alabama AIN'T GONNA grow as nutritious plants OR as big of deer. It just ain't gonna happen. I'm spending the money and time I can to produce what I got, and its good enough for me. I don't need Lee and Tiffany deer to be satisfied. It would be nice to see one every now and then, but I ain't wasting my hunting "career" passing 130 or 140" bucks on "MY" property to wait on some dream to come true.

Congrats, many shoot smaller less mature bucks. Congrats on being able to watch a mature buck without being overcome with a desire to kill. The only way he'll ever get bigger is by doing what you have.

ya don't need a trough, though supplemental feeding will help if ya have a drought, or really cold winter. Planting enough summer and winter food plots helps a lot.
David Morris, of the Tecomate show many years ago turned a place in Ga into a real eye opener of a hunting property thru plots AND supplemental feeding AND trigger control. The genetics were there just not enough nutrition and age.

That's fine.
But it's not impossible that Alabama deer can't get any bigger than 110-130. They can, and do, even without "trough" food.
There's a stud buck photo in the GenForum that reportedly came off a tract west of Decatur that doesn't have trough food. Maybe that one's an anomaly.

God Bless, David B. Good post. I can see exactly why you didn't shoot. No since in killin him just to do it. I have watched a few big mature deer like that and enjoyed every minute of it. One or two that I let go, but most bit the dirt. A 4yo+ is gonna get it from me the majority of the time. If I have my bow its every time no doubt, unless they just don't "crank my tractor".

I agree completely. There are "freaks of nature" out there, and could be killed in any county in the state. It's just 1 in a million chance to kill one. If someone wants to wait their whole life to do it, hey suit yourself!

No sense in killin him just to do it. If more guys would accept this line of thinking - even if they don't shoot 2 or 3 bucks a season - it would make a difference. Same with turkeys, too.
