Great buck. Congrats on the restraint. That's what it takes if you want to kill "really" big deer in AL. abolt this is not directed at you but the comment hit a nerve... That's what it takes to kill really big deer ANYWHERE. I really believe Alabama gets knocked on too much. I really hate to hear someone say (esp. on a tv program) "that's a really good deer for Alabama". I know we don't have ag fields for miles and miles, but groceries is not the only thing it takes to grow big deer. Alabama doesn't have "really big" deer because anyone with $24.00, a gun, and time to squeeze in a hunt over 3 months can kill 3 bucks regardless of size or age. Oh I forgot...one of your 3 must have at least 4 point on one side. Until the I have to kill something mentallity changes that will always be a really big deer for good ole Alabama. It's not rocket science...it's trigger control. Let em go...let em grow. Another comment before I get off my soap box...the excuse "if I don't kill him my neighbor will when he jumps the fence". Guess what, YOU are that neighbor. Carry on. Flea, I'm not sure I understand your post and its reference to mine hitting a nerve. That's exactly what I was implying/meant with my comment. It's hard for a deer to make it to maturity with 400,000 hunters, 75-80% having the attitude that they absolutely must kill every rack buck they see and having 108 days to do it. Age is directly proportional to trigger restraint and that is the real reason why there arent more "really" big bucks arent killed in AL. Not that I am in any way proposing it but if the state banned deer hunting for 5 years and then opened it back up, a lot of people would be surprised at what was coming out of AL.

Good job. If you manage your property and you do camera surveys every year then you know exactly what you have on your property and know which bucks deserve a pass and which are mature. If hes made it this long I would say hes got a great chance of making it till next year and will probably have his best set of antlers to boot.

Y'all are fooling yourselves on thinking that AL can compete with the Midwest on the quality of antlers. It takes a lot more than age to grow true trophy-class antlers!!!!
BUT, it is a very important part! You are correct. Age is just the most easily adjusted factor in the equation here in AL since most dont own the land they hunt. Midwest is the perfect storm of deer hunting. Good genes, short season, low population of hunters, lots and lots of food and good dirt. That being said, AL can produce some still very impressive bucks if they are allowed to live to 5 yrs and beyond. That buck in the video is a 4 yr old and out in the midwest he'd probably have another 20" of horn from the higher nutritional plane. That deer wouldnt raise an eyebrow out in the midwest even at his current age and size while here in AL he would have been shot by 85% of the hunters 2 yrs ago as an 80" 8 pt.

And Hog I believe you are selling the potential of this state a little short. Look at what Pennsylvania was 10 years ago before the state mandated antler restrictions and limits. Look at what is comiing out of that state now. Simply look to our neighbor to the west. There are great deer coming from Mississippi. And regarding the whole idea behind my comments...The majority of us would love to go to Illinois and hunt but the majority of Alabama hunters could not live there and stay out of jail. Their season consist of archery only with 2 seperate shotgun/ml seasons of 1 week each with a tag system of only 2 bucks. One with archery and one with gun. Think about it 2 WEEKS OF GUN SEASON and with no high powered rifles. We would not know how to act. Think about ALL the bucks that would survive here if that was the case. Do you not believe in 5 short years what we think is "really big" would change? Of the 3 factors that control antler growth (age/nutrition/genetics) we can only really control the age. Let em go & let em grow.

BUT, it is a very important part! true on average Danny, but Alabamas weight record is a staggering 365 pounds on a 60's Pickens Co buck. And the non-typical record is a monsterous 256 B&C inches... don't sell our POTENTIAL too short....
