Bigt, There have been many proposals floated by the dog hunters association to address the fact they'd lose an additional 10 days from their already shortened season if the current framework as proposed is approved. Several of them, including letting dog hunters run their dogs during the 10-day, gun-season closure in December, were made at the Feb. 9 CAB meeting. Dog hunters who spoke almost to a person voiced support of February hunting but only if it did not mean they lost 10 more days in their season. Because those proposals were met with blank stares from CAB members, ADHA members in SW Alabama decided to oppose the entire February season proposal on its merits. Their position now is, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." If you really think about it, it's hard to argue that point with any scientific or even anecdotal certainty across the entire region. What's so wrong with things now that we need a February season?
Point is: Despite how you feel about dog-deer hunting, it's still hunting. Those folks buy licenses that return the same amount in federal Wildlife Restoration funds as the license bought by someone who does not hunt with dogs. We also can't forget that dogs are also used to hunt rabbit, squirrel, hog, coyote, fox and even quail. I'm in favor of all forms of legal hunting, period.
Not arguing, just sayin'.
The ADHA is hosting an open meeting at 7 p.m. at Creola City Hall. Several state reps. and senators along with district CAB members are expected. New WFF Director Chuck Sykes may also attend. While I expect there will be a bunch of pro-dog folks there, everyone is invited to attend. Organizers plan on having folks sign up and speakers will be on a time limit. Creola Mayor Don Nelson is expected to moderate.
