Wow.
"Collectors" or people who "traded" (bought/sold) artifacts?

Better stock up on preban bootleg arraheads. I do feel much safer now that they got the arrahead smugglers off the street

Wow.
"Collectors" or people who "traded" (bought/sold) artifacts? most collectors buy and sell arrowheads.... They sell the ones they don't want and buy the ones they do!

If they were dealing in illegally obtained, stolen, etc... artifacts then they get the trouble they borrowed. No different than dealing in stolen or illegally obtained merchandise. I'm gonna reserve further comments until I know the facts of what went down.

According to this news story it says they were sneaking onto historic sites at night and looting, then selling what they looted. I dont put much stock into news stories but if that is what they did then they deserve what they get. 13 arrested in alleged scheme to sell stolen Florida artifacts By The Associated Press Published: February 27, 2013 » Comments | Post a Comment
TALLAHASSEE — Thirteen people from Florida and Georgia have been charged in what state investigators called a "criminal conspiracy" to sell artifacts stolen from state-owned lands in Florida.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers described a nearly $2 million black market in illegal historical artifacts. Items shown at a Wednesday news conference included dozens of pottery shards and arrowheads.
Those arrested were called the "main dealers and looters." Some were accused of sneaking onto historical sites at night and digging in the dirt with hand tools.
Investigators said the recent arrests resulted from a two-year-long investigation that used an undercover operative posing as a buyer. The looted artifacts often were listed on websites such as Craigslist and turned up at trade shows.

and here is another story with a little more detail. 13 arrested in alleged stolen artifacts scheme By JAMES L. ROSICA - Associated Press
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. --
Eleven people from Florida and two from Georgia have been charged in what state investigators called a criminal conspiracy to sell artifacts stolen from state-owned lands in Florida.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers Wednesday described a nearly $2 million black market in illegal historical artifacts.
Items shown at a news conference in Tallahassee included dozens of arrowheads and pot shards. But many stolen artifacts likely will never be recovered.
"This looting didn't just take artifacts from the ground," said Robert Bendus, Florida's state historic preservation officer. "It took history away from this generation and from future generations of Floridians."
The FWC's Maj. Curtis Brown said those arrested were the "main dealers and looters." The youngest defendant is 25; the oldest is 74.
"This network is a very tight-knit group of folks," Brown said. "They had collectors they dealt with and they'd sell around the state and around the country."
Brown confirmed that the investigation is ongoing. When asked if some of the collectors who bought illegal artifacts would also be arrested, he said, "There may be additional violations found."
Other officers served search warrants on four homes in Florida and found artifacts and other illegal items, according to a FWC statement. Two of those arrested also were charged with drug possession.
Investigators said the recent arrests resulted from a two-year-long investigation called Operation Timacua, spurred by complaints of looting lodged over the last five years from around the state.
An undercover operative posed as a buyer, Brown said. The looted artifacts often were listed on websites such as Craigslist and also turned up at trade shows.
Asking prices for some of the artifacts were as high as $100,000, Brown told reporters.
Some of those charged were accused of sneaking onto historical sites -mostly in northern Florida - at night and digging in the dirt with hand tools.
The charges listed include multiple counts of violation of historical resources, dealing in stolen property and illegal removal of artifacts by excavation.

Sorry but, "digging in the dirt with hand tools"...what else were they supposed to dig with? Also, they said "It took history away from this generation and from future generations of Floridians."...if they were buried to the extent of having to use hand tools to dig'em...how were they taken from this generation...they were never gonna see it, no? I hate a theif...and if these guys were getting this stuff from state owned lands...that's wrong. But years worth of investigative $$$ for "dozens of arraheads and pot shards". Grief.
The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

Since the investigation has been going on for two years, you can bet that the state had some Night Vision or IR cameras set up to get the pics of the perps. I would also bet that they planted some evidence in some of the areas they perps were visiting. That way, when they bought their evidence back from the perps, they could prove were it came from and the identity of the person who took it. It's easy to mark things with UV ink so that you can prove point of origin without leaving discerning marks.
Otherwise, I don't see how they could have a case and say these guys were robbing artifacts from a specific location and selling them at shows.
If the state has the proof to back up their claims and the charges, these guys are toast.

From what I am now getting through the grapevine, it looks like these guys were hitting state parks, state historic sites, etc... The pot sherds and "arraheads" were minor compared to other stuff.

If they were purchasing stolen property they can get in a lot of trouble too.
