Whatever happened to waiting until you can afford a kid to have one and if you can't afford one don't. I guess I'm too old to understand. It's welfare I don't care what you say. I agree to a certain extent,my wife and I just had our third child and she has a severe milk allergy and her formula went from $17/can to $45/can,a can last three days so do the math and see how expensive it is per month,my wife and I are fortunate enough that we can afford it and don't have to rely on programs like WIC even though I would get it in a heartbeat if I could, sometimes certain situations come up and put families in a financial bind and these programs actually are doing some good and not being abused in these situations

Piggly Wiggly had smoked boston butts and racks of ribs the other weekend. They are dang good, and very convenient. There was a big sign out there that said WIC approved.
It is hardly a strict program. I would almost bet my next paycheck that you can't get a boston butt or rack of ribs on WIC... Yeah, you could be correct. It could have been EBT approved instead of WIC. I will check the next time they have them, cause I think I may have misspoken. I ain't gonna bet you though, I work too hard for my money for my brain-fartin head to get in the way. I used to manage a grocery store in Jacksonville while I was in college, and I'm sure many boston butts were sold using food stamps. The scam now a days is to find a place that doesn't need a receipt to make a return, get cash back from groceries bought with an EBT card, and then go by booze/cigs/drugs... Or sell off your EBT money. Checking IDs just doesn't happen as much as it should.

Wic isn't the same as food stamps ebt is a joke Ive seen people that do what your talking about it. The way I feel though is that I've paid into these programs all my life and if something happens tomorrow and I need welfare food stamps or whatever that I've paid into it.
We will burn that bridge when we get there

Welfare Programs: What was intended as a safety net has become a hammock!
I forgot who on Aldeer used that line or I'd give them proper credit.

We are currently on WIC. It is for my wife who is 21 weeks pregnant. I GUARANTEE you that it is not a loose run program. At most, she gets $40 a month of necessity items that promote health for her and the baby. It is a great program for Women Infants and Children (WIC). You wont be getting beer, cigs, or RACKS OF RIBS with it, I promise. Some people should insert their foot when their mouths decide to open before stupidity spills out. Some feet need slobber on them in this thread.

I do believe that many people abuse programs like wic and ebt and food stamps. I would much rather see wic and food stamps be short term low interest loans to be paid back when you get on your feet. I do believe in helping people but I also believe that people need to pay their own way. I'm sure I'm going to get a lot of crap for saying that but I've never gotten anything free in life and wouldn't want to.

It's not free. If you pay taxes then you have paid into the program. Based on that answer I should just apply for my ebt card tomorrow. If you really think about it all of these entitlement and government aid programs are paid for by taxpayers as a whole, not just the person receiving it. There are lots of people with kids that get back more than they put in. How did they pay into those programs? And yes I know wic isn't ebt but its still a government handout at some level

And yes I know wic isn't ebt but its still a government handout at some level From 2005-2012 I worked at a place that destroyed chemical weapons. Each of those 7 years, I worked HUNDREDS of hours of overtime each year, therefore paid 10's of thousands of dollars in taxes over those years. I saved enough money to afford to put myself through school and not work for a year and finish my degree. I am now looking for a job at an insane pace, laying tile on the side with my brother in law to make what money I can. Im sorry if I don't feel bad about my wife, who is a teacher, receives her $40 a month worth of fruits, veggies, milk.....and I wont feel bad when my baby is getting its formula, or at least part of it, from WIC. You cannot put EBT and WIC on the same playing field. One is STRICTLY regulated and the other, well, I will save my opinion on it because I have never dealt with it.

Didn't ask you to feel bad, just trying to point out to Matt that there are plenty of people that haven't paid in any. If everyone used these programs as they are intended it wouldn't ruffle my feathers a bit but there is serious abuse that goes on within many government programs. They are supposed to be when you fall on hard times not a lifestyle choice. Jchan I wish you well with your job search.

If WIC is different from all the other gubment handout programs then it's the ONLY one that's different.
Calling people who want smaller government names for being critical of the program isn't right IMHO.
In Straycats case and a VERY few others I can see the use in the program.
However, my general stance on any government program is they suck and should be done away with. The reason we can't get rid of any program is because of people just like on here. They yell and scream about smaller government, but not if it affects me or mine.
Either you are for them or you are against them. There is very little wiggle room in between in my opinion.
Character is not developed in moments of temptation and trial. That is when it is intended to be used.

Either you are for them or you are against them. There is very little wiggle room in between in my opinion. There is a difference in being critical of a program you understand vs. one that you don't understand. People arguing that WIC and EBT is about that same thing are WRONG, and thinking you can get anything other than necessity items such as fruit, veggies, milk, and some whole grain wheat items for the pregnant mother, or formula for an infant, is wrong wrong wrong. If someone reads up on WIC and knows exactly how it works and how regulated it is, and still disagrees with it, then I have no issue with that. Everyone is entitled to an informed opinion.
