If I want to plant an approx. 200 yard x 50 yard shooting lane, how much seed will I need? How do I go about doing so after tilling? What kind of equipment do I need? What's the best product on the market IYO to plant in small fields? Thanks

50 yards wide ... You can get a tractor and a disc to cut it with no problem..... Bag and half of seed(mix) depending on what you plant... You plant a brassica it won't take that much...

Most all mixes are 2 bags per acre...

Wheat,Oats,Rape,Winter Pea mix 1 1/2 bags max.... Don't want more than the land can hold.....Then they will be fighting for nutrients....

That's one hell of a shooting lane.

Just the name we call it. We've got like 500 yard fields spread out on like 1700 acres. So it is pretty small. Hardwoods and pines behind the stand, and a ditch in front if it. It's a pretty cool field. It's got rye in it now, I'm just looking for something more nutritious with more sustenance. I'm 14, though, so I need all the advice I can get.

No more than $16-$18 a bag unless it has gone up... May want to call the place you plan on buying it from...Prices will vary from store to store...

Seen you said you have cattle. I plan on planting a green field around some this year in a new spot I'm hunting. You ever have any problems with cattle eating the green field? Might be a dumb question but I've never looked into it before.

If your numbers are correct, that's about 2 acres. Some mixes are 1 bag per acre some are 2, depends on the mix and how much the bags weigh of course. If you want nutritious and to raise "swamp donkeys" your going to have to plant a good mix, not the cheapest stuff you can buy. Check out Wildlife Management Solutions , Alabama company that has some great products. I plant their Deer Magnet, it has pretty much something for year around forage. Good stuff.

Is it going to get atleast half a day of sunlight? As mentioned above can the cows get to it. I've tried doing many little food plots by hand in my day. Make sure you have a good seed bed then some how drag it or do some thing to try and cover the seed, or else it'll end up being a dove field haha.

No. We have it fenced off for my hunting. What do I drag over it? Like a baseball field rake?

If you start today, you might be done tilling by the last week in September.

If you live on a 1700 acre cattle farm, you've got to have a few tractors around! Hand tilling will beat you up, and you'll never manage a field of that size.

If you have turkeys you probably need to plant some extra seed. Those two legged hogs will eat up a food plot.

2 acres is not a small food plot, it's bigger than +/- 99% of all plots planted. I'd plant oats, wheat and rye grain and top seed with clover. We plant 50 lbs. each of oats, wheat and rye and top seed 10-15/lbs of crimson clover per acre. Do a soil test or put 200-300 lbs of 17-17-17/acre.

Yes I've used the flat side of a baseball field rake before. Like others have said these techniques I've been using on a lot smaller fields. Like 20ydsX20yds. My biggest problem with those fields were not enough sunlight and keeping the leaves blown off.

I don't need a soil test as we have planted corn here before.

I'd spray it with glyphosate and broadcast your seed. This will work, unless you have turkeys. If that's the case, can I lease it for turkeys? Haha
