I know it's mostly a varmint gun but I've been told if you get a bonded soils core bullet it will hold up to taking a whitetail. Would like to get some thoughts on this.

Why??? Yeah it would work. Better be extremely picky with your shots. I might do it if it was the only gun I owned. There are a lot better calibers for whitetails, that could also be crossover rounds for varmints and other game. Don't really understand.

This is my opinion, A 22-250 will kill them just as dead as any with the right shot. I am a .270 and .243 man my self. A .270 will push a 130 grain basically as fast as a .223 will a 55 grain. that's like a .243 shoot 100 grain in deer season and .55 grain in off season. A 55 grain in 243 will faster and flatter than a 22-250. just my .02

got an inlaw that only shoots a 22-250. shoots a 60+ grn winchester soft point. he's killed quite a few with it. I have used a 64grn softy on a doe before and dropped her within 10 yds. I stick with 25 caliber bullets now.

It will kill a deer, but there are much better caliber options available. This should summarize the next 25 argumentative opinions. thumbup

I put 3 down last year with a 22.250. None went more than 50 yds.

Killed 3 with a 22-250 and none took a step. It hits hard. I wouldn't want it to be the rifle in my hands if I knew the buck of a lifetime was going to show up.

Very popular caliber in Texas it seems.

If it will shoot a TTSX well, I would have no qualms about shooting an Elk.

I should have been clear I shoot a 300 win mag but my son is old enough now to hunt and he likes shooting my 22-250 I figured it would be a good gun to start him on.

my daughter has killed 3 in the last 2 years with a 223. the load i use is a 80 vld berger. also use 80 amax . with a holland tight neck reamer and 26 in kriger barrel i can get 3000 fps. last deer she shot was 174 yards and drt. for the 22-250 if you have a 9 twist or faster a 62 gr barnes x is a great load. i have killed lots of does with that load.

I've killed 15+ using a .220 swift with factory loaded 50 gr. psp's, all shot in the neck or chest.

odocoileus, my 223 a-max load is 25 grs of varget , lapua brass, cci br-4 , the ojive ist 2.000 witch is 10 th in rifling in my gun . overal length is 2.455 . this gun is set up with tight neck holland reamer for manson i think. this reamer is 252 neck and similar to a wylde 223 reamer. kriger barrel has 15 shot es of 16. and average of 2983 fps in 60 degree weather when chronographed. also does well with 25.0 grs of rl-15. the gun is a trued action 700, with the ejector removed

Man that is steaming. What twist is that barrel? I'd really like a faster twist for my 22-250 instead of the factory 1-14" so I can use the heavier bullets. Nosler used to make a 60gr Partition but I haven't seen it in a while. I think they just came out with a 60gr bonded bullet though. But if I ever was to rebarrel, I'd have a hard time not going to the 220 Swift.

Like many have said, yeah you can kill them with the 224s, and 204s for that matter. But if I knew I had a chance at a big buck, much rather have that 308 in my hands.

odocoileus, i use a 7.7 twist in the 223 to shoot 80 vld and 80 a-max . in 22-250 i have been using 9 twist. i like tthe 9 twist in 22-250 . i have shot every thing from 50 gr nosler to 80 vlds with 9 twist. i agree the 308 is a good choice. this year i built my daughter a 260 . with a 14 med palma bartlein and a muzzle brake it kicks like a 223, but shoots 140 berger hunting bullets at 3000 fps
