I got some turkeys in chilton and bibb but it would be a couple hour drive. It might be worth it if you hunted the weekend I have somewhere to stay.
Would walk over a naked woman to get to a gobblin turkey!

I understand.....it's hard....but the more of em you kill the easier it gets If it got any easier for some of these folks (they know who they are), the turkeys would have to kill themselves just as they came into killing range.

Heck 27, You can only kill 5 a year.
Even if you killed from birth that wouldn't be enough for me.

I've killed a few; still want to shoot some more. A LOT more. I would be a miserable tv hunter. It would go something like this: Camera Guy - I see him! Let him make it to that opening and we'll try to get him to put on a show! Me: Boom!!! Gotta take the shot when its presented; fooling around with a turkey can lead to a bad jinx. MFK is too young to understand such things. If he keeps hunting, he will.

Hang around this place pal....if you're a serious turkey hunter, you will love it in time....takes a little while before they fully accept you though. They wouldn't even allow me to hunt turkeys for several years....much less join in the posting here.

Gobbler will be along any minute with the tracking study data that turkeys can and will roam miles a day and not roost in the same area. I am not being funny here either. He has the data to back it up.

They CAN/ WILL doesn't mean they DO......I know for a fact it was the same turkey.....unless it was 3 different turkeys within 100yds of the same spot missing the exact same tail feathers (pictured in my other post)

What do you mean by a bad jinx?? I've called up the same turkeys 3 days in a row before we shot them..... Congratulations! That oughta set off your first good turkey jinx. You may have called up the same turkey 3 days in a row before, but you never did it and posted about it on aldeer. Posting about something like that here pretty much guarantees a jinx. If you have never lived thru a turkey jinx, you just can't imagine how its gonna be. You can do everything perfectly and the turkey will still get away. And not just once; day after day after day. I once killed 22 in a row with my SBE and for some reason felt the need to post that here. I think it was in some kind of argument about shells. Anyway, next bird - miss. Outback posted that he had never missed a turkey in years of hunting. Next bird - miss. I could go on and on, but you get the picture. When you get caught up in a turkey jinx, come back here for advice. You'll find this bunch a lot more willing to give out anti-jinx advice than they will be to let you hunt their turkeys.
All the labor of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.

What do you mean by a bad jinx?? I've called up the same turkeys 3 days in a row before we shot them..... I won't argue it wasn't the same one if you were talking about one turkey with missing tailfeathers. I took your post to mean multiple turkeys. Same one in same place 3 days in a row then you had a home body to hunt.

Well I personally choose not to believe in jinxes or bad luck....I believe you make your own luck with patience, persistence and hard work.....now....I'm not crazy enough to say "I never miss"...or "there ain't one I can't kill"....but every turkey I've ever missed or screwed up was because of something I did....not a jinx. Every morning I'm in the turkey woods I have a talk with the good Lord, thank him for giving me another day to turkey hunt, then whatever happens, happens....like I said earlier (not bragging or being a smartass) if I never kill another one I'm not going to complain.....calling them up is way more fun than shooting to me anyway

What do you mean by a bad jinx?? I've called up the same turkeys 3 days in a row before we shot them..... I'd have gone boom on 3 turkeys in those three days if that was me. I don't turkey hunt to bird watch, or entertain somebody else, or impress somebody, or spend time in the woods. Seems to me like it ain't-a-pode-a-be-dat-way. I'm hunting for the rush of one coming in to where I can turn him a flip and tote him home with me. And I have been know to get irritable if the guy I'm hunting with tells me, "wait, don't shoot, let me get some more video footage..."

Oh yeah, jinxes are real. I had to engage in all sorts of voodoo in 2012 to rid myself of a jinx on a certain gun. It's a long story... And yeah, it was something I did that brought the jinx on.

Yep. I visited several turkey hunting sites looking for advice on how to rid the gun of the jinx. (And yeah, it was the gun. I was 0 for 9 with that particular gun during a certain time frame, usually not encountering a turkey at all, while something like 10 for 20 using 4 other different guns.) I ended up doing several different things including dabbing it with turkey blood from the next one I killed, letting it sleep in it's case with a gobbler feather, and verbally explaining to it that I was sorry for my mistake, etc. And then, the next time I took it out, I was faced with the exact same situation that caused the jinx in the first place. So,I swallowed my pride and didn't make the same mistake again. And the jinx ended that day.

I got this doll from a guy in north Ga, he said it had the bad gris-gris on it......
I used this one on a guy that had his church pray that I wouldn't kill a turkey one year because I wouldn't go to his church....he didn't kill a turkey or even a deer for a couple of years. Quit hunting and went to fishing.....
I once,in a moment of complete stupidity, said I turkey hunt with a bow because they are too easy with a gun. Anyone who believes in a jinx knows how that ended.......

I'll go ahead and give you a tip that I picked up from Yekrut right here on aldeer; it is powerful anti-jinx medicine. You are gonna need some.
When you are blessed to kill a gobbler, get down and roll around in the blood and feathers like a dog. Try to get as much of the blood and turkey smell on you as you can, and of course, don't wash those clothes again until the season ends. I haven't experienced a jinx since I started doing that. Thanks again for that tip, Yekrut!

Thanks again for that tip, Yekrut! The only thing about that anti-jinx medicine is that a man would have to use some sub-par turkey loads to get a bird to bleed enough to make a difference. They just don't bleed with TSS. Reckon I need to keep some Nitros around just in case?

That's because you are using 9s. Switch to 8s and you will get some blood. Switch to 7s and it will be like a deer kill.

Gobbler will be along any minute with the tracking study data that turkeys can and will roam miles a day and not roost in the same area. I am not being funny here either. He has the data to back it up. Gobbler ain't weighing in on this young-un or this debate. I am pretty sure I have killed a couple multiples of his numbers and 1) I don't wait for a "better shot" or to get more footage and 2) I would probably pine away if I never got to kill another. Anyone who is interested can go back and see previous years posts and learn a LOT about jinxs and home range data, etc, etc, blah blah blah I will say that noting (especially among this group) that your so good you have called up the same turkey 3 days in a row and know FOE SURE it was the same one is almost certain to bring on a nice case of a jinx
I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine

Ok I'm about to take everyone's breath......I don't believe in jinxes.....turkeys are stupid....they have a brain about the size of a walnut and any animal that will mount up and try to get a piece off a decoy ain't real bright, or that jumps on a flopping turkey after you've done shot his ass just to get his head blown off too.....now lets see if I'm jinxed come march 15th.....now I may go all year and not kill a turkey....but if I do it's because of something "I" did not some stupid jinx

A jinx has nothing to do with what "I" or "you" did. That's the jinx part. You can do everything right, and it all goes wrong. How is that something you did? Couple of examples will serve, of my last misfortunate year. 1) Set up on bird and he is coming on a string. Wild dog runs in and scares bird off. 2) Set up on a bird. Bird is working nicely, coming. Another hunter slips in between me and him and kills him. I have more, but in every case everything was out of my control and nothing "I" did could have changed the outcome. Good luck this coming spring.

My tactics must be WAY different than y'all's....I learns some things 2 years ago from a buddy of mine that has killed 300+ turkeys and my numbers last year doubled.....now I don't set up on or call to a gobbling turkey most of the time until I put my eyes on him.....once you get that close ain't a whole hell of alot that can go wrong.....unless he smells you I guess

I am humble....I'm far from the best and I'm sure many of you are way better callers and hunters.....I've not bragged once! All I have said is if I never kill another one I've killed my share and in order to get good footage you have to be willing to let let turkeys go.....and I've killed enough to be willing to do that....that's my opinion and how I feel....that's not bragging or boasting

Be a good place to put up a deer stand after you clear a shooting lane with it. Actually, I prefer straight nines in brush...

I learned years ago that trying to out-see turkeys is a losing strategy in the long run. Don't get me wrong - I think that getting close is crucial to a high-percentage encounter of the gobbling kind. But I prefer to try to use his eyes against him, instead of trying to out-see him. It kinda goes directly against that if you can see him, and he can see you, when you start calling to him. I want him to come looking for me, and don't want him to be able to see where I'm calling from till he's in range and I have the safety off and the bead on his neck.

I very seldom get to call to a turkey after I've seen him, and if I made it my goal to see him first, I'd see a whole lot of them flying away. And I have found there are a whole lot of things that can go wrong after I have put my eyes on one. I have the battle scars to prove it. Don't take us too seriously, MFK. You are just getting a good aldeer welcome, and most of what's in this thread is just joking with you. The guys that post here in the off-season take turkey hunting pretty seriously. Most of them knock out an AL limit of 5 birds pretty fast in the season, and then go state-hopping to try to kill some more. Some of the posters in this thread regularly kill double-digit numbers each spring. I have learned a lot from them; hang around and you will too. And some of them also make turkey calls. Good luck with all your hunting!

Can you give us a few pointers that you learned from your sensai? One thing I've learned the hard way over the years is to get down wind of where you expect the gobbler to come from. Don't listen to anyone who tells you that a turkey doesn't use it's nose. Another thing I've noticed, turkeys have good vision but I think it's overrated. My final tip today... Keep a set of feet around all year long. Once or twice a day, I'll pick up those feet and practice my spurring and fighting. It's really helped me pull those hard headed gobblers in close. It allows my to judge their trophy quality much better.

One thing I've learned the hard way over the years is to get down wind of where you expect the gobbler to come from. Don't listen to anyone who tells you that a turkey doesn't use it's nose.
]
Yep. You can tell when you're fooling with a really old smart turkey. He will try to circle around and come in down wind of you every time Bout the only chance you got is to yelp at him one little lick and then jump up and try to cut him off like a rabbit when he makes a loop.

Are you really gonna turkey hunt with tss#4? I don't wanta be on the other side of you when you shoot. Preacher........... Tommy gave me some of those 4's to try out for home defense and coyote loads. Hal's 13/16 oz .410 load would have 68 pellets of TSS #4 . Seems to me like that would be a tremendous amount of firepower at short range from a taurus judge or any of those other .410 revolvers. Might load a couple of 2 1/4 oz 12 gauge shells with them. I would almost bet money that would be a dead coyote every time at 100 yards+ if you could figure out the holdover. You got me thinking though, an ounce if 4's over an ounce and a quarter of 9's would be 533 pellets. Any load over 500 pellets is plenty good enough to hunt turkeys with. If you used those little 9's Hal gets it would be a little over 600 pellets. I wouldn't seriously wanna hunt turkeys with it cause if feel like I was wasting my shot but if it came down to it I'd still rather shoot that load than anything that could be bought from a factory. It would probably make a real good deer/turkey combo load for anybody with a fall turkey season

Well I've been gone for a few days, this has been very entertaining. I struck a nerve and he had told everyone on here how he is a stone cold killa including pics of probably just 3 different birds. If I did kill over my limit I probably would not post pics of my name and number. Thats just me.lmao

Don't let the bad guys get ahold of these things. And I think that combo would be a very effective turkey killer. Heck, 2 oz of tss#4 would be miles better than the 2 oz of #4 lead I used to sling at them. And you are right, it would be a great coyote load. Good luck with it!

My son is struggling with a 12 gauge and I don't have a 20 gauge yet. just asking. I guess it would have to be custom loaded if so?

Oakachoy, TSS 4 wouldn't be a very good load for turkeys because of a lack of pellets but TSS 9's make an awesome turkey load for a .410. Don't let the little 9's fool you they will be plenty good to kill one out to 40 yards or so. Ridgestalker on this forum killed 4 or 5 turkeys I know with a single-shot .410 and TSS 9's this past spring. I picked up an old single-shot savage .410 like the one he has the other day and I'm gonna try to hunt with it some next spring.
There are enough people around loading it now that you would probably be able to get somebody to help you if you bought the shot, especially to help a kid. That's good news to him, he had a choice on a new bow or a 20 gauge and went with the bow. He loves some .410 single shot, so who wants to help a man out? I'm buying from someone if possible. Can you buy these loads from an outfit if nobody wants to load them for me?

4s or 6s either one would probably be plenty nasty. The added weight would extend the range some. If that guy that the motor cycle thugs jumped in NYC had a Judge with some of those little babies, he'd have made a mess out of them.

#2 TSS at 1200 fps will give you 1.25" ball. gel. penetration at 237 yds.
#4buck lead will give you 1.25" at 228 yds.
But in real life, on hard material like bone, there is a bigger difference than what the math says. That's because the math doesn't take the hardness into account. For example, the math says that 00 Buck in lead at 1200 fps has 30+% more penetration energy than #1 TSS. But when a traffic sign is (legally) shot with both, the #1 TSS will punch through at about a 10% higher rate. So, you can always count on TSS penetrating deeper vs. lead than the ballistic gel math says it will.
If someone wants to shoot TSS in a .410 at turkeys, the way to go is to use #9s, or better yet, 9-1/2s. If you get a pattern that is typical of what most longer barreled full choke guns get, the 9-1/2s will give you bonafide 45 yd range with my 13/16 oz load. No joke.
