I need some new chains and a seat for a API Grand slam myself.

Daniel the best way on those API is to do it yourself. New they're like $80. You can but the chains and all the stuff to do it for $30. As far as the seats I could probably use a couple myself

Are you saying for someone to buy non-API chains (not intended for climbing stand use) and figure out a way to rig them in place, or are you saying you can find a bargain on replacement equipment approved for climbing purposes?

I thought about using some equipment chain on it my self, believe it or not my dad bought me this stand 14 years ago when I was 14, and it is still all original, it gets left out all season and hung up in the off season, the stuff thats on it is still working, but wore out.

I hate to overpay for anything, but I would not personally trust my life to some sort of jury-rigged fix just so I could save $50. Maybe API buys the same chain and does the testing/engineering to validate them for bearing those loads overhead while live human beings are suspended from them. But without knowing that, I personally wouldnt be comfortable. I just wanted to present the other side of that topic.

Interesting. Is "A2040" a chain size or a strength class? Just checking. ... I dont want to see anyone get hurt.

Good luck with your project. Be careful.

It's the size, and possibly a "description" or designation of type for lack of my proper wording. That's not standard roller chain. Not sure what its intended use would be.

I don't think this would fall under jury-rigged. In his post he said he used the same chain as the original in his stand. He is not the only one to do this. If you Google it you will find many people have done this. From what I've read the chain is rated at 3500-3700lbs, which should be plenty. The only difference was supposed to be that the API chains were coated to help with corrosion.

This works!! I bought all the stuff last year on Amazon.com after looking at this thread. The A2040 chain is the exact same chain that is purchased by API.

You can get 22mm shrink wrap on ebay for less than $10. On the Archerytalk post he said he found it at Harbor freight for $3. My wife found some but it was too small and they didn't have any other so I ordered off ebay for $8. Its from China and took nearly 2 weeks but I did get it.

Well for what its worth I already went thru this. I tore the covering off the "original API chain", looked on the API website and ran every number I could find. I believe it was finally the API website# that crossed. Guess what..it was a part # for a combine chain. So I went to TSC and got the same one...except I think the TSC chain is a much stouter chain. As far as covering. Skip the Heat shrink it tears and wears to quickly. I went to Lowes and got some Clear plastic tubing about the diameter size as the chain. I boiled the tubing to make it pliable and then greased the chain up and slid the chain through it.(this took some work)

Next, You will have to pull the plastic inserts out of the stand so the increased diameter of the tubing will fit in the stand. I coated the edges of the stand inlet with Plasti-dip to cover any sharp edges. I have been using this set-up for Three years with no problem. I inspect the chains regularly, and since they are in clear tubing I can see them very well. The tubing has worn ALOT better than the heat shrink, and it allows the stand to bite the tree well. I'll put it this way, I was going to buy a new stand this year, but in the end I couldn't find anything wrong with mine other than needing some new paint and some new pads. One thing I would suggest replacing since API has had a history of them breaking is the pins. You can get them at TSC also, or Basspro sells a 4Pk for like $14 (cheaper than TSC).

You just need to make sure it is a 3 to 1 shrink ratio. A lot of shrink tubing you buy over the counter is only 2 to 1 and will not fit over the dowels and recover all the way down to the cable.

I know this because I supply the tubing to Summit.

I've tried the heat shrink tube. It cracks very easy, The pre wrapped chain from api lasts much longer.

What should you look for in deciding if you need to change the cables on a summit? I have probably had this stand for 8 years.

Those cable on your Summit should never wear out. The way the cable is twisted and then the dowels affixed almost prohibits the strands from straying. The only thing that you likely will have to replace is the shrink tubing that goes over the cable. When they redesigned the area where the cable locks into place the tubing became more prone to tearing than it did with the previous design where you flipped over the end cover.
