What constitutes a "hill" or "mountain"?

Reason I ask is me and Josh were chatting this past weekend about how hilly this lease is in Clarke. Its got some of the steepest drop offs and hills Ive ever hunted. Now I know Im a flat lander being from down south and all but on this property If a deer takes off 20 yards in the wrong direction after a shot I can see where its going to be a game changer.

After our fat out of shape butts were huffing it back out of a bottom looking for his deer I got to wondering how you old farts do it up north.

Don't shoot pissy does. Just shoot bucks worth shooting and you will certainly find a way to get it out.

Have kids that drag em for ya! Few years ago my dad shot one off his favorite rock, it's 20 yards off the side of the road and sits on a 50 foot bluff and he can see couple hundred yards down the mountain. He shoots, bang, flop and calls me and my buddy to drag it back up the mountain. 1 1/2 hour to drag it the 100 yards up the cut in the bluff. Now there's a 4wheeler road down there.

Jackson county the mountain I hunt tops out at 1800ft and our lease covers ground from 900 to 1800. It's hard, rough, ugly, nasty hunting for little basket racked deer and ain't no turkeys but some Jakes and hens. Ain't no deer or turkeys anywhere in Jackson county... grin

I hunt Choccolocco WMA alot and have had some 4+ hour drags before.Hunting by myself often makes it a tough decision going off some of those ridges or not. I have found several decent spots that I can get them out of with a cart in the past couple of years. I have 3 good buddies that I hunt with when we can all get to hunt the same days and we always help each other get them out. I did kill a buck last year back in there that I just couldn't drag another foot so I took a chance and drove the Yota off a big ridge to get him. I know it would have been a ticket but at the time it was worth the risk.

Oh Ive already made plans involving a skinning knife, garbage bags and a big back pack. Screw dragging one a foot.

You'll be amazed at how motivated you are at driving your 4-wheeler in to the deer's location. I've made trails through some of the nastiest yaupon heads and down some really steep bluffs to get to deer. Them wheeler's are tough machines.

Negative ghost rider. My honda can go down some of the hills he speaks of but it will be coming back up in pieces.

Then you drive it to the edge and pull the deer out using a rope and your wheeler.

You just gotta pick your route carefully. Go up at an angle. Straight up may be shorter, but can be harder. Take plenty breaks and tie it off on trees or roots so that sucker don't slide downhill on you. Pace yourself.

With a chainsaw, duct tape, roll of trotline and some redneck engineers you'd be suprised some places you could get a 4wheeler.

Our elevation in Jackson changes 1000ft plus from the Tenn. River valley to the tops of most of the mountains. It can be very steep in places. Know your property, have a 4X4 4wheeler you don't care to drive through some very rough places. Kill does close to the road, or in the road is even better. If you are along way from a road, kill only bucks with large drag handles. wink Try to hunt up hill so you can drag down hill if there's not a road you can circle down hill after the kill. I usually drop about 10 lbs in season, even though I'm eating more than normal around the holidays. Hillbillys gota be tough.
What we call mountains , folks in the Rockys would call hills.

There is places up here in Jackson that would take over 10 hours to get a deer out. But I love it, and wouldn't have it any other way. It's bush country up here no doubt. I'll ask rocket to post a pic of a holler behind my house, now if a deer ran off in that and died, it would be a game changer for sure!

Sometimes packing it out in several trips is the best route.

Seems to me that a man who hunts Jackson county benefits greatly from either being a good enough shot or having a big enough gun to make them drop in their tracks. It's a huge plus also to have access to get into a place from the top and bottom of the mountain. That way all your long drags will always be downhill

Well like most have said elevation to 1700 to 1800 ft not drastic comparable to the Rockies. If you have a 4 wheeler thats nice it won't be nice long. Deer killing is selective unless you don't have to work the next day. One deer I killed last season killed it at 3:30 pm loaded it in back of the pick up at 9:30 pm 8 point that was 20.5 inches wide with 9 inch G2's and coke can bases.
