For the past week and half I have been heading out every chance I got to the B side of the WMA to scout out a place to hunt. I used Google maps to locate a long ridge that dropped off into 4 hollows. The first time I went and scouted the area, I found a few small rubs and scraps but nothing that just stood out. The next time I went I decided to move over a couple ridges and immediately found bigger sign, not a lot, but bigger. I decided to go in Friday afternoon and hang my stand. Saturday morning I was up at 3:30, dressed and out the door by 4:00. After stopping at the store I rolled into the area I planned to hunt at 4:45 and someone had already beat me there. I had no idea where this person was going to hunt but I knew that I was a little over 1.5 miles in so the chance of him being there was slim. Lucky for me he didn't go as far as I did because I didn't run across him on the way in.

The wind blew hard all morning long and with me 20' up a tree on top of that ridge, it seem to be blowing harder and I knew it would be near to impossible to hear one walking in the leaves. At 10:15 I look to my left and there is a doe that came running behind me. No sooner than I see her I see the buck behind her. I tried everything to get him to stop but he wasn't taking no part in that. I found him in my scope but he was running behind everything possible to keep me from getting a shot. He finally ran thru an opening and I squeezed off a shot. He ran about 50 more yards and started to slow down so I squeezed off a second shot. After the second shot he tucked his tail and bailed over the side of the ridge out of sight. I wasn't for sure if I hit him the first time but I was almost positive the second shot connected. Right after I shot I looked over and a 4pt came down the same trail with his nose on the ground. When he got to where I shot last, the 4 pt jumped about 6' to the right and just stared for about 10 seconds, then his nose hit the ground and he was gone behind the doe. I was hoping that he was looking at the buck laying on the ground but wasn't sure. I climbed down, went to the last spot I seen the deer and low and behold, there he was 35 yards away. To say I was excited would be an understatement.

I finally picked up enough service to get intouch with Reyn and he met me to help with get the deer out. When we pulled back up to go in after the deer, I noticed a different truck parked there. About halfway in, I run across the guy and he asked if I killed one. I told him yes and he said "lets go get it" I said well come on. When we got back in there to the deer, he looked at it and said, my gosh that thing is big then told me he had a picture of it. I said what kind of picture? He said a trail cam pic that his buddy got off his trail camera. I thought it was wild that I run across a guy who I have never met that volunteers to drop what he is doing and help drag someone else's deer out of the woods. Not only that but he also happens to have a picture of the deer that I killed a few hours prior.

I shot the deer at roughly 10:15 and we got him out of the woods a little after 4:00. He weighed 197# and Matt Brock roughed him at 166 5/8.

This story may seem like a bunch of rambling, but it made sense to me wink

Dang nice job bud! I saw the pics in the other thread and this story just tops it off. That other guy probably is a nice guy, but he wanted to "help" you drag that beast out probably to see where you shot him. Sounds like he wasn't far anyway, seeing that he had a pic of him.

I don't believe MT knows yet. The guy that helped had received the pic from another friend of his but didnt know where the pic was taken. Just that it was in Bankhead.
