I have two stands setup that work for tomorrow mornings expected wind direction. One is a ladderstand on a clearcut and the other is a box in some select cut pines. If it blows like it says it will in the morning, what environment would a deer want to be in?

I always like to hunt hardwood bottoms on windy days. Seen a lot of deer movement.

Hunt on very windy days. Do it, and thank me letter. Hunt near thick cover and open areas. Those are the days its time to get serious.

I live in the mid west. If you don't hunt windy days you wont hunt here. Deer are used to it and adapt accordingly, just like they do in Alabama. Hunt the thick stuff and you will see deer...

I took Matt's advice and remembered an area I hunted last year and had seen some young bucks. An old fire break between 5 year old planted Pines and 18 year old select cut pines. Without the heavy wind this hunt would have been unsuccessful, as I'm convinced this deer would have been spooked by my entrance to the stand. Heres the story:

I made my way in approx 1/4 mile down this firebreak with a stiff north wind directly in my face. I climbed a big pine that was in a draw that comes through the planted pines. I set my stand, loaded a shell, and put the safety on. As soon as I looked up this buck stood from his bed not 40 yards in front of me. All I could see was his neck and antlers as he browsed through some really thick cover. He made his way to an oak dropping acorns about 40 yds to the east and I was able to find a hole in the cover and make a neck shot on him, DRT. 8 point, 18" inside spread, 165#. A 4.5 year Baldwin County buck.

Just curious, although i've killed some good bucks on windy days, why do you say these are the times to get serious? I realize they can't hear you walking, but other than that?

I learned through trial and error and stubbornness. I had a negative experience with a processor once and decided to learn to do it all myself. I used to skin deer for the entire camp when I was growing up, 20+ members. Once the ol' boys figured out I was capable, they kept me busy.

Ever since I was a little boy I've enjoyed skinning and butchering as much as the hunting and killing. I get immense pleasure in feeding venison to others and changing their perception of what wild game tastes like. Over the years my interest has evolved more into making specialty cuts much like an old time butcher. I'm still learning a lot on that front and I use youtube for a lot of inspiration. Look for instructional videos on lamb processing; There are many more due to their commercial production.

Nice Baldwin County deer. Looks like the south eastern side of the county.

Congrats on the deer. I am really interested in how you cut your deer up. I process my own and have for many years. I debone all mine and am really interested in what you have done. I guess those bone in chops are tederloin and part of a rib? If you get an opportunity I would really appreciate seeing a step by step picture tutorial.

Looking back through my observations and kills, 20 mph + NW winds following a precipitation event have resulted in FAR more mature buck kills and sightings than all other variables and conditions combined. The colder and more windy the better. If you can barely hang on to the tree you are in then its a good day.
