Thats what they say but where are your neighbors buttonheads going?

I've only killed one and it was with my crossbow. Two deer came out and I got what I thought was the biggest one. Didn't think it was when I shot it but it still ate well. I've actually got that hunt on video if I can find it I may post it.

I spelled it out pretty plainly in my post. It was something I have read, and was just curious what the reasoning is either way. Thanks for your help though!

I've heard that too. I'm sure I've done it a time or two as I have shot plenty of does with fully self-sufficient fawns in tow. However, I wouldn't make it a regular thing, the family tree of the deer on your place will have no branches! There's a reason the mother pushes the young bucks out.

I killed my first and last button buck 15 years ago. It was a week after I killed my first and biggest buck to date (first deer too). I went out that afternoon feeling pretty good and was set on getting a nice doe for some meat. I shot the first doe I saw at 150 yds and dropped her in her tracks. Walked up to it and realized it was a 65 lb button buck. I felt pretty bad after that. I went from 205 lb 130" 8 point to a 65 lb button buck for my 2nd deer. I learned my lesson and have never shot a lone doe since. Button bucks have to be the dumbest deer in the woods from what I have observed since then.

I shot a button buck one time at 30 yds after watching it for 20 min. I would have bet you a paycheck it was a 80-90lb doe. It ran out of site when I shot. When I went and found it, my first thought was I could pick that thing up and put in my back pocket. I don't know what it weighed but could have been much over 50lbs. Woods and surroundings can be deceiving on a lone deer standing there with not much to relate it to.

Likewise the ones your neighbors pass will help you on a smaller tract. Lumpy is correct, orphaned buck fawns tend to stay in the general area after momma gets it.

good optics, and patience when choosing a doe to shoot.I have killed several button heads in my time, and it's a sick feeling, fact of the matter I shot one the last day of the season, last year.I had several deer out in a wheat field at last light, and decided to kill one, they where well over 200 yards, killed a big doe and the others didn't run so I took another, and that was the mistake. It happens.....

I would rather be turkey hunting

It's gonna happen at some point, may piss yourself and/or others off then so be it. Pay a fine or say I'm sorry or just get back to the hunt. Life Doe's go on.

Guilty. I also try not to shoot a lone doe unless its a BIG doe. I also usually won't shoot a doe at low light in the evening. I'm looking for antlers then.

Rule of average. If its the first deer in the field and its alone. Then 90 percent of the time it's a little buck . Just my thoughts. If three or more deer are in the field it gives a better reference to compare to. Ex long nose nanny . Most of the time a little young antler less buck will be kinda arch backed as best as I know how to discribe. Kind of oval backed . Any way to avoid shooting a nub buck just wait until there's more out there to compare to . Thanks

This is the most ignorant reasoning I've ever heard.

If you shoot the deer, he has zero % chance of staying on your property. Who's to say this young buck hasnt already made his migration and has set up his home range on your property?

Just think of it like this. If you and your neighbors all take the "I'm going to shoot every spike I see because he is just going to move onto my neighor's property anyway.", approach, you are then all killing off the young bucks, and here by deminishing your future stock.

Turkeys be damned.

I did this a few years ago. I watched this deer for over an hour and just knew it was a doe. I felt like crap after I realized I shot a button buck.
