The best advice I can give is never hunt the wrong wind.

Thanks for all the Great info, Words of wisdom & encouragement!! Sadly, he and any other deer in the vicinity were a no show this morning. I sat from 4:45am until about 30 minutes ago, and DEFINITELY did NOT want to leave! But, when your kid needs you...You leave (; Also, to SFC3...I'm sure it seems I'm over excited and complicating the situation... Lol. But, actually this is what I'm getting aggravated with! The aforementioned "advice" from the hubs and his buddy is the source of all the questions I asked. They seem to tell me so many different things and something different every time! My suspicion of being misled came in part from my research, and mostly from noticing the men hardly ever use the things they tell me to...or do the things they tell me to do. Anyhow, going to try to get back in the woods today in a different area..and try going back to the spot I was in another day when I can for sure stay the whole day! Again, Thanks to All! You're hunting a deer, not a genius, well trained commando...Its WE men buying into all the gadgetry and overcomplicating things...thanks to the TV shows One of the Buck Commander show (I think it was Buck Commander shows) ...One of them killed a deer wearing a Santa suit... With all gadgets they sell now days...cost a fortune...95% are useless...Between the Ozonics, the Deer-view mirror, the snort, grunt, wheezer, 6000 kinds of doe piss... To use a Grinch list of toys... Jing Tinglers Flu Floopers Tar Tinkers Who Hoovers Gar Ginkers Trum Tupers Slu Slumkers Blum Bloopers Who Wompers Zu Zitter Carzay Who Carnio Flunx and all the other assorted BS they sell...Keep it as simple as you can...Dress warm and quiet, remember its better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it as far as warmth...Hand warmer packs are your friends...dont wear to many socks either...feet will sweat and to much constriction cuts off blood flow...dont let your feet sweat...you wont be happy if you do If you're gonna be in a house...a blanket or sleeping bag isnt impossible, take off your boots and wrap your feet in a blanket (get Hubby to buy you the boot blankets things)...maybe a snack, something to drink...but remember you gotta carry it;-)...like someone else said, make yourself comfortable...Being warm and comfy makes you sit longer and quieter...Thats the key to killing deer...is being there to do it vs freezing your rump and off and leaving I know a very successful female bowhunter...she reads in the stand...She can sit dawn to dark in a tree... Pay attention the wind!...adding in rattling, grunting etc...it can work...but most of the time it wont...Sounds like your in an area where the bucks are...Be as invisible as you can...as in noise, scent etc...They're used to where they are, do you notice weird sounds and smells in your house?...SO will they...get in the house, figure out before a deer comes wheres your gun rests are, is something in the way, will I have shoot left handed if he comes out wrong...figure out if your chair squeaks if you move a certain direction...Play the shot out in your mind... I take a piece of cloth...usually a cheap pair of gloves to place where my gun will sit on a window sill...so no bumps or scratching if I move it..And don't let them know you exist till the BOOM no perfume (of course) Dont twist up your brain about all the 'tips and tricks' you see on TV...simpler is better...The smarter tips are how to stay warm and attentive and quiet Think like this...I'm gonna snuggle into a comfy chair, relax and stay warm, and quiet...and watch a really good hunting show...a REAL one...

Hunt with the wind in your face If the wind is wrong for a stand, go somewhere else Leave all gadgets on a shelf in walmart Try to hunt where the most/ recent sign is Walk the last 300 yards to your stand Have confidence in your gun and shoot it often
Other than that , GOOD LUCK!!!

Good advice in this thread. From reading your story the only thing I can add is kick your husband in the nuts. I do everything I can to get my wife on deer when she can hunt. I agree . Kick him in the nuts.

Wind, wind, wind wind wind, wind, and especially wind when you are bow hunting or gun hunting in close quarters.

Wow! Try remembering all that! Two things I didn't see much in the previous responses...sight and smell. 1. Sight. Use binos. When you look at the vegetation with the naked eye, your brain tends to see things as flat. However, when you look with binos you can actually "burn thru" the vegetation to see what's behind a limb or a bush. Also, look for partials, not just wholes. Look for pieces of deer (ear, shoulder, part of a back, curve of the rump, leg, etc). If you're looking for those small things rather than the entire deer standing broadside, you'll realize there are more deer there than you think. Lastly, scan the sector deliberately in a similar pattern to the way you mow the lawn, leaving no section unscanned. 2. Smell. Many have given recommendations about staying a scent free as possible. I agree and will tell you what I do. The deer's most sensitive sense is his sense of smell. Old woodland BDUs or very abstract camo that breaks up our shape will keep the deer from seeing you. Here's how we "camo" our scent from them. First, I wash all my hunting gear/ clothing with a scent-killing, earth-smelling laundry detergent and let them hang dry. The drier sometimes retains the smell of the drier sheet even when it's not being used, so I let them hang dry. After dry, I spray them down with scent killer. Then after they're dry, I put them in rubbermaid bin with a lid. I put cedar chips in the bottom and a few fresh pine boughs on the top and close the box. I ALWAYS get dressed in the field to avoid any smell that may be in my truck (gas, food, coffee, etc). Lastly, I spray down my exposed skin and shoes with scent killer. If you do that you are doing everything possible (at very little expense) to remain scent free. Hope this helps!

Sounds like you are in a good spot to kill your first deer. First advice is that you can't kill them sitting @ home or sleeping in your warm bed , but sounds like you are putting in the time. The next best advice I could give you is that it WILL happen and after you kill that first deer it will seem like your eyes have opened and you will start seeing more deer and more bucks ! Leave all the gadgets @ home, pay attention to the wind, make sure your scope is on and have patience. I was in my late 30's before I killed my first deer; my dad raised me a rabbit hunter, and only crazy people carried rifles and deer hunted! He may have been right about that one ! Good luck and good hunting !

if you are hunting a food plot you may want to try using a climber instead of hunting from a shooting house. get about 100 yds off the plot on the down wind side. bucks this time of year are looking for does they will scent check the plot from down wind if there are no does they will likely not come out.if your in the house you will probably not even know he went by. by being in a stand off the plot you can cut him off then all thats left is talking the hubby into dragging him out.

Wow, I'm impressed! I like your style. I'm not going to add much this late in the game, others have already given good tips. You probably hunt fairly flat land, so you can play the wind. At this stage I'd say leave the lures off, let the does do the work. You know that's how men operate, right . You could get a quality grunt call, and use it SPARINGLY, mainly if you see a buck that's not coming your direction, it can turn him and bring him right in. If you don't have a quality grunt call, go to this site: http://redskyoutfitters.com/ and order a Rod Benson Grunt call. Either a all plastic or wood, doesn't really matter. Set the rubber ring between young and old buck and enjoy. You hubby and his pal gonna wanta know where you got that great sounding call. Hope you kill a monster.

here you go. I sent you a pm too.
First you need to post your pics on a free account on a hosting website like PHOTOBUCKET.com . I use it. Then you click on your pic there. Several links will appear. Click on direct link and copy. Come back to Aldeer you'll see the block where you type your post. Above it are a line of blocks. The 4th is the photo link. Click on it then click on "Insert a center floating image" Another window will open. HTTP will be in the strip in a blue background. Hit delete on your key board. Http will disappear. Right click and paste your link in that bar. Hit OK then the link will be in you post black box. Hit submit. You're done.

Rachel, the thing about grunting and rattling blind is that while you may get a young aggressive buck to come straight to you, most of the old timers will circle to get downwind. They like to know (smell) what they're getting into before they commit. It's better to use them when trying to get a buck that you've seen passing by you to come back in Welcome
