Quick question ... A neighbor has a few ATV's he is gonna sell off soon and before I go look at them I'd like to know if they would even suit my purposes.

So, for hunting areas like Skyline how much horsepower in an ATV would I need ... Assuming a 200 lb man and a 200lb deer coming back up HBT or one of Jacob's trails?

I think 300cc is plenty. You will appreciate the smaller size if you ever get it stuck and have to pull it out yourself.

300 would work but I would say 400 or larger. Make sure it has 4wd.

yall boys need to learn how to ride . laugh I can take a 250 and about put it anywhere you want with a little insinuating.

But to the OP, if your un experienced on a ATV 300 with 4x4 would be very helpful..

I wouldn't worry about size, but be sure it is 4x4.

3 or 400 cc min. 4 wd is a must. Also, if you are new to riding atv's go with somebody who is experienced and learn how to ride. There is alot of technique involved with steep or rough mountain riding.

I would rather have my Honda 300 4x4 for mountain hunting than any other 4 wheeler made since. They're all too big and too high off the ground these days. I have hauled myself, my son, and 2 deer and gear on my 300 on a few occasions. Plenty of power. As long as it is 4x4, you are smart about the way you put weight on it, and you RIDE the flipping thing (NEVER putt around going up steep hills on a 4 wheeler....kick that thing in the arse and keep your forward momentum going)...you won't have any problems at all.

I've got a friend with a couple of Hondas. We took them down Jacobs Mtn all the way down to the Boy's Ranch then up to the power line trail and back. That is all the experience I have with them but I must say I had a blast!

after 30 years of hunting in Jackson Co. on sometimes really bad roads I would agree. 300 would be pushing your luck and if any of the roads are real steep or rutted out you would be wishing you had a bigger ride.

I like my Suzuki 250 4X4 for the low center of gravity. I really like the 5 speed, instead of an automatic. That's a personal preference. A 4X4 and a size that you can handle would be a good start.

I like the manual gears as opposed to the automatic for hard riding. Just my preference. Also I like the smaller 300 and under size due to being able to man handle them if you were to have an accident and end up underneath one.

Low center of gravity is good but some times you need a little height to get over those big rocks in the mountains.

Ok here's the data ...

Not interested in the Yamaha, too costly and has 1200 miles on it

So ... 2012 Polaris 400 Sportsman

Automatic

Has 556 miles on it, mostly on flat ground at a lake house. One good trail ride

He wants NADA $$ for it ...

I'd wait until deer season is over and pick up a nice used Honda......

Back when the honda 300 was about as big as they made them I have carried four men and a couple of dogs many miles.
