and what apparatus do you use?

Some people do turn necks for guns that are not "Tight Necks", just to center the cartridge in the chamber and attempt to align the bullet with the bore.

I use Sinclair Internationals Turning tools for .30 Cal and K&M tools for 6mm. I run .002” total clearance on both loaded rounds. I only neck turn for Tight Neck Chambers. I think that neck turning for a SAAMI would be a waste of time and would actually increase misalignment with the bore. Allowing the loaded round to lay farther down in the chamber due to gravity and the increased neck clearance, unless the cases had been NK sized only or the bullets jammed into the Lands. I always FL size. I bump the shoulder .001” - .002” to decrease the force required to close the bolt.

I neck size only for most of my rifles using bushing dies. Once in a while I'll have to bump the shoulders back.

Some brass are way off consistent for neck thickness. The non-tightneck customs I have benefit greatly from cleaning up the necks.

Sometimes only one side of the neck gets trimmed using my Sinclair neck turner.

Remington brass are the most inconsistent brass I have used.

I neck turn Norma and Lapua. The Norma cases are not very consistent in the neck either. But I take a total of .003” off of the neck and they clean up fairly well. Neck turning will give you more consistent neck tension.

And sometimes some people just like to get the best they can get out of their equipment. For whatever purpose.

Usually inaccuracy is attributed to numerous small factors as opposed to just one thing.

I have Sinclair neck turning tools, but I don't use them much anymore. I do roll every case that I load on a concentricity guage and discard the ones that are out more than .002 This is after they are fire formed in my rifle and neck sized with a bushing die.

Grandma said...Always keep a gun close at hand, you just never know when you might run across some varmint that needs killing...

marcus1,
It’s not the Olympics, but close. I don’t turn necks on Hunting Ammo. I only neck turn for my rifles that have tight necks that a SAAMI round will not chamber in. All of them are Wildcats that I use to compete in IBS 600, 1000 yard Benchrest or NRA F-Class.

For a hunting rifle, neck turning is a huge waste of time. You'll never see the difference in the field.

Liberals are of a mind that it's entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

It's not a waste of time if your hunting gun is chambered with a 'tight' neck. It is then a necessity.
