I've heard bucks make a sound in the rut that I'd describe as a moo. The few times I've heard it and seen the deer it always turned out to be an old buck. We had one about 20 yrs ago that hung around one plot. 3 different people heard him make a sound that all described as a moo; he never set foot in the plot so I don't know how big he was. There was a very big track in the area that season. I heard another one make the sound while chasing a doe, and did see him. He had the biggest body I've seen on a Perry Co deer, and a very wide and thick 6 pt rack. Let's just say he got away. Its a different sound than the normal grunt. The grunt starts with a "B". The mooing sound has a definite "M" at the front of it. I wonder how deer know the alphabet? I've heard the sound only 5 or 6 times in 50 years of hunting. I'm sure the eggheads have a name for it other than moo, but that's what it sounds like to me.

I've heard the moo too, but I associated it with a young buck because that's what I saw later.

I've heard it the last 3 times I've been hunting, west of the 80, on sand creek .Amy heard it west of the west field . Since it sounds like more than one making the sound( one deeper and one high pitched) I'm going to say both buck and doe make the sound.
