Ha ha, we have the opposite problem, we can get the di-cal here in NA,but not Redmonds. That would be a fine mix for sure.

If anyone in NEA is gonna make a run to Tenn for a load of Redmonds, I'd like to try some.

They keep the redmonds at Kimball Tractor supply.

Thanks, I'll check Scottsboro's TSC, may have to make a run to Kimball.

What type location is best for a mineral site? Close to water? On a ridge? In a holler??

Closer to water lefthorn and in clay is best, the one I posted above was about 60 yards from the river.

Yes clay is best. We haven't put out blocks in several years and they keep clawing up that clay to get the salt out.

I also use this and it better than any rock, crush, ect.

WHITETAIL DEER HOMEMADE MINERAL MIX RECIPE
Printable version
Ingredients: Makes 200 lbs. for about $23.00

1 part Di-calcium phosphate, this is a dairy feed additive bought at feed stores.
Comes in 50lb Bags at around $11.00 you need one bag.

2 parts Trace mineral salt, the red and loos kind without the medications.
Comes in 50lb Bags at around $5.00 you need two bags.

1 part Stock salt, ice cream salt.
Comes in 50lb Bags at around $2.00 you need one bag.

Directions:

-Use a 3 pound or similar size coffee can to use as your measure for each part of the mix.

-Mix all together well but not until read to use, keep ingredients separate until ready to put to use.

-Dig or tear up a circle in the soil about 36 inches wide and about 6 inches deep.

-Mix your mineral mixture with the soil.

Maintenance:

-Replenish in 6 months with fresh supply of mineral, and then each year there after.

Helpful hints: One is best time to put it out is March/April and I put all 200 lbs in one hole. Also I like a water source to be within 100 yards.

If you put it out this time just put 100lbs won't do as much for them now. But will be a slight draw. Good Luck

These prices are a few years old, but the recipe is still gold!!!

arKic, That recipe is from a guy I use to listen to on the radio here in Missouri years ago. Allen Morris was his name. It was given to him from a private land conservationist from Missouri Department of Conservation in the 80's thumbup

My Dad and I use the recipe above (arKic's post), but we use lime in place of the stock/ice cream salt. The deer absolutely love it!

We put a big batch of this in our mineral sites in February, then freshen them up with half as much again in the Summer (usually August or so).
