I have scooped horns and don't mean this to be a PETA sounding post and I'm not being critical of you. I know dairy cattle are bred for milk production and horns are an afterthought.
I don't know of anything that has ever affected me the way that use to. I have never done anything to an animal that made me feel worse than scooping horns and I will never do it again. I won't run any horned genes to keep from having to do that now.
Have you ever tried burning the base? We did that for a while and it worked really well.
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

For me it's just as fast to scoop them, but I try to catsh them early. My Holstein is polled. But my Jersey isn't. When I AI. I try to stay polled. But. We don't do it anymore in the beef operation. Same as you we stay polled.

Yep when you cut the grown ones you can see into their skull. Yes they will bleed and you gotta spray them to keep bugs out.
When you gonna do some cutting...and when is the cookk out..love me some calf fries..

You mentioned the dehorning paste. This is kind of gross, but I gotta mention it.
My dad bought some when I was a kid but we never used it. About 15 years ago, in an attempt to remove some warts, I found the old unused dehorning paste. I had a wart on one finger and a plantar wart. I put a circle of vaseline around each wart and put a drop of dehorning paste on each wart. I waited for about 10 minutes or so, until I absolutely couln't stand the pain any longer and washed it off. Both warts were red and there was a faint red line around each wart. It was clear the the skin had separated from the warts.
The skin around the warts was puffed up and I squeezed the one on my finger like a big zit. The whole wart was about the size of a BB and it popped right out of the hole. The one on my foot did the same thing. I haven't had a wart on my finger since then. It left a small scar when it healed up.

We were close to your AO today. Left the hunting club near Craigford, and headed to Roanoke. Came out on 431, just below Wedowee I think. Ate lunch at Gedney's after a visit to Wally World. And no, they don't have .22LR either. Then we took 22 and 77 back to Ashland.

Oh, we rode through Wadley enroute to Ashland. That town is kind of depressing.

yall drove right past my hunting club.if yall need a good shortcut to walmart in roanoke, next time yall are on 22 look for 73 on your left and you go a mile down that road and take a right on 26 and go about a mile and a half and it dumps you out on 431, take a right and go a mile or so and you are at walmart. ive never timed it before but i believe it takes a good 10 minutes out of the trip to walmart as opposed to going 25 all the way through downtown roanoke.

I've done it as well, sounds and looks dirty and is painful but mine all turn fine. Some people think it's just abuse...the hell with them. Daniel, idk know how many cattle you have but could imagine your bill if you had to put every cow you dehorned or bull you "desacked" under full anesthesia?

Daniel, idk know how many cattle you have but could imagine your bill if you had to put every cow you dehorned or bull you "desacked" under full anesthesia? I aint never worried about there pain much, I work alot of cows solo. I can usually cut them and de horn them in less than 30 seconds by my self. Alot of people hold there tail and put nose tongs in them, which is good, I just get em and go. If I hobby farmed i would probably be different, but when I got to make bank at the end of the month, I just get it and go. BUT I will say if you want to really hear them holler, when I cut em, I cut the whole bottom of sack off and run the balls between my fingers and rip them out at same time with one hand. Ha ha, that will make them jokers scream.
