Daniel

First off don't feel bad. I have multiple degrees, make good money, yet I envy your day to day work! My goal now is to, in the next 10 years (I'm 35) to buy a large tract of land to live on. I want my own farm, not to the extent of what you do but a farm none the less.

I have had the opportunity to meet a lot of people in my career (sales) and can honestly say that some, if not most of the brightest individuals I have met have never set foot on a campus. These are the guys that the "educated" people turn to to make things work. I think high schools now days push college on to many kids. It takes a well rounded work force to make this country work efficiently. Today there is a huge short for skilled labor.

Graduated from engineering school first, then went to dental school. I might have more debt than anyone on this site, so don't let "more school == more $" get to you. College and graduate school were both very challenging to me (just darn difficult), but both proved to be excellent experiences in my life. Both experiences trained me to think logically and continually learn. But it was the personal experiences (people/places/etc) that I learned the most from. Met folks from all over the world, traveled to South America, Asia, etc. Also lived in the Western US for a few years as a direct result of those educational experiences.

If you're happy doing what you're doing, and like the life experiences you've had and are having, don't worry about formal higher education at a local college. For me, continual learning is a must in my life to keep complacency & boredom down. I always try to keep learning about things I'm interested in--patient care, business, wildlife management, self sufficiency, etc--not just to get more pieces of paper. My goal has always been to never have to update a resume for someone else to critique. I'm 33 now, and just achieved that goal.

Went to trade school and got a degree in Welding. Worked as a coal miner full time working my way through junior college and got a degree in Business Management. Kept Working my way through UAB, in the mines, and got a Bachelors Degree in Marketing/Business Management. It took a while and it was hard work, working full time and going to school, but I finished and did so with no student debt.

I took my last class at The University of Alabama in May of 1994. I had about 20 hours remaining to finish my degree in Health Care Management. It took me 10 years to get those finished. When I finished my degree, I did not need it to do my job. However, I could not have the license to do the job I have now without the degree I earned. It paid off for me.

O God, you are my God; early will I seek you. Psalm 63:1

Daniel, look into Athens State University Adult Degree Program. It takes previous work experience from your past and puts that towards your total credit hours. It can take up to roughly 10 elective classes off your total degree if you do the work right the first time. I can get you a number to a person that helped me in it. It is kinda new to ASU and only 3-4 degree options in it right now. It is the only way I went back to college.

I graduated with a BS in forestry from Auburn in 2008.

I wish I would've worked a little harder and gotten a GIS type degree or some kind of engineering degree.
