I don't understand why the transponder can be turned off by someone on the plane. Seems like that is something that should be on all the time so if something catastrophic happened they could locate the plane. Thinking the same thing

Plane will be used in a terrorists plot at a later date. God help the passangers. This is what concerns me right now. If it can fly under the radar and be hidden in a hangar then it can be loaded with some sort of crude nuclear device and flown back under that radar to a given target. Or maybe my tin hat is on a little tight this evening.

Guys, its so obvious. Space aliens in the mother ship snagged it with a tractor beam and hauled it to the next galaxy. Yep

If cell phone calls are still ringing, can they not locate the pings of the cell phones?

If cell phone calls are still ringing, can they not locate the pings of the cell phones? Just because it rings on the end of the caller, doesn't necessarily mean the receiving phone is actually ringing...or so I've been told.

A ring generator is what you hear when you call somebody, not their phone actually ringing.
I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

Why don't they have some kind of epirb in addition to the other things that will automatically go off sending a signal to satellites if they go down. It could be out of reach of anyone in the plane. I suspect the pilots were up to something in this case. that would be the elt.emergency locator transponder that is activated by g force and is picked up within three seconds of activation.
