"The confrontation occurred around 2:20 a.m. The father had a gun and asked the teen to identify himself, police said, according to the report. His daughter reportedly told her father that she did not know the teen and that the two were not in bed.

The father said he told the teen not to move, but reportedly saw the teen reach for something, at which point police say the father opened fire. The teen did not have a gun. His daughter later confessed that she did indeed know the teen, the report said."

It was a stupid move on the boy's part, but after being told to identify himself, he may have been reaching for a driver's license instead of just responding verbally.

That is just a bad situation all the way around.

However, I do not think I would have pulled the trigger unless I saw him brandish a weapon first. It's hard to say, though, what would actually happen until I was in the situation.

I just don't see where the dad or daughter have a case at all.

Even if she tells the truth it doesn't mean he isn't a threat since the father doesn't know him either.

So if someone I don't know but others in my household do comes into my house, I'm allowed to shoot them? Crazy!

Did I say that? Nope. I said as far as I know he was still considered a threat. Obviously you would have to question your daughter's choice of male companions since you couldn't have done a very good job of raising her or she wouldn't have a boy in her bed at 2 AM like a two bit hooker. Just sayin...

You find a man in the bedroom with your teenage daughter and she says she doesn't know him. He's a possible rapist, at best, or at worst a burglar, and you're on edge because you just got awakened from a dead sleep by another child. Because your daughter doesn't know him, you think he's there for one thing - he's about to rape your daughter.

The man reaches for something. You have no clue what he's doing because you told him not to move and you have a gun on him. Police are on their way. You think he's wanting to get away and making a move for a weapon. You fire in preemptive self defense because this rapist may have a weapon.

AFTER the guy is on the floor, the daughter screams that you just shot her boyfriend you knew nothing about.

If I were on the jury, I wouldn't convict the dad. No way.

She told her father she DIDN'T know him. Thats the only information the father had to go on.

OK put yourself in HIS situation. You wake up to a stranger in your daughter's room of YOUR house. She says she doesn't know him and he doesn't answer when you ask who he is. Then he moves after you tell him to stay still. What do you do? Ask him about the weather?

Well said. I totally agree. BUT, I'd bet that he gets sued by the dead kids parents, at a bare minimum. No winners here.

Two different stories being reported.

One says the cop said the father reported hearing noises, investigated, found someone in his daughter's room, "a confrontation" ensued and he shot.

Other one says what was originally posted - kid wakes up daddy about someone in the bedroom, he goes in, etc.

So none of you guys ever snuck into your gf's house? I did and I have sons as well as a daughter. I'd hate to think that even though my sons would be in the wrong for being at his gf's house at that hour, that they could be justifiably killed just for being there.
The stories of what happened are changing. I only commented on the info that was presented and based on that, the daughter and dad were in the wrong and should face punishment both criminally and in civil court.

Hey einstein, when you're trespassing into someone's home at 2am and the owner of the house has a bead on you and tells you "don't move", you don't move. He wasn't shot for "no reason". He was shot because he didn't follow a command, at gunpoint, while trespassing in another man's house.

I just don't see why this guy isn't getting it... YES I would shoot any person in my house at 2 am if I didn't know their intent and didn't know them. This man was protecting himself and his family. I don't see where he did anything wrong, but then again you are from Florida and probably a transplant Yankee so it explains quite a bit.

No.

One young woman I dated, I couldn't tell if her mother had a CCW weapon. She was divorced and, while I don't believe she did, I wasn't stupid enough to sneak around someone's home at 2 a.m.

Another one I dated, I know her father carried. He was an ornery sumbitch and I suspect would have shot me at 2 a.m. like any father would have if he thought a stranger was in his home who did not follow a command to freeze, cease, identify, etc.

Based on the original post and information, for all this father knew it was a criminal with a gun to his daughter's body under the covers and once he moved, he could have been coming out to shoot. WTH knows what was going on?

But at 2:30 a.m. if you're holding on a stranger IN YOUR HOME who your daughter/family member has said they don't know him and he disobeys a command and makes a move, lead's going to fly.

The father didn't know he had been invited/let in at the time of the shooting did he?

But he didn't know that he was let inside at the time. The easy daughter lied and he thought she was getting raped or harmed.

He didn't know if it was a break in, and it should constitute self defense because of the information that he was given at the moment. His daughter is the reason the boy is dead. If she just said that he was with her I doubt the kid would have been shot

You must have voted for Obama. This teenage boy put himself in the position for bad things to happen. It is tragic that the kid lost his life but if the father was sober and clear headed and the boy didn't cooperate then the father shouldn't go to jail.
