That is very odd. Thanks for taking the time to post the pictures.

I figured I would post a pic or two of the progress. Its starting to get a little crowded. Hopefully it will warm up enough to move them outside soon. [Linked Image] [Linked Image]

Looking good! Are you going to put them in tree tubes?

I will definitely do some of them around my greenfields and around the sawtooth orchards but I doubt I try and do them all.

Just curious is there anyway to tell what kind of chesnut tree is growing in my grandmas yard? It's pretty big and been there all my life that I can remember. I'll try to get some pics but either way id pick up some chestnuts and mail them out if somebody needs them.

It's probably an American Chestnut. You can google it and look for a dendrology description, but you will need a small limb with leaves on it.

It would almost have to be a type of Chinese or Chinese hybrid if it is very old at all. There are a few american chestnuts left out there but they are very few and far between. Michigan has a decent stand, I believe.

We have a large Chinese at my great grandma's old house that came from Auburn. If there is only one tree there though, the nuts most likely won't be viable. The ones from that tree aren't. I'm planting a Dunstan nearby and will create a new hybrid in a few years from the two.

Being in a yard, I'd about guarantee it's a Chinese Chestnut tree.

Good looking tree. I bet that sucker drops a ton of nuts literally.

Yeah it covers the ground, but there isn't another tree close by to pollinate it. I float tested hundreds of nuts last year and didn't find one viable nut.

I thought I'd put up a few pics of the chestnuts I didn't plant this spring. I was pretty busy and got a little behind so I decided to wait until the fall to plant more.
I started putting small amounts of ammonium nitrate on them a few weeks ago and they've really started putting on more top growth now. The growth was slow when I first moved them outside this spring from lack of wind inside. If I do this again I will definitely put a fan on them in the greenhouse.

Did you buy rootstock? If so from where?
I've been collecting a lot of plum pits to start plums this winter and had been considering pears as well for next years rootstock.
