I see youre old school like me and actually practice hunting ethics.

From some of the responses on here I see some dont...and are greedy and selfish and will go after any bird no matter what. Hence the problem with public land hunting.

I guess some people never learned if someone else is there...move on to where someone isnt. It isnt that hard and was taught in the old days as the RIGHT thing to do.

I guarantee you a lot of those people pull up to trucks and listen JUST to see if someone is working a bird just as I stated I witnessed at the bankhead before. Then run in to cut off the bird themselves. Very selfish and greedy in my book and show No ethics at all.
Thats just my opinion and why Id rather not hunt then hunt public land.

I also guarantee you that the very same folks will be screaming and arguing when someone does it to them too. Funny aint it?

Me neither. I used to hunt on Mulberry several years ago. When I was driving in to my preferred locations, I would often come to a gate and see another vehicle parked there. With Mulberry being as large as it is, I would just continue to drive until I found a gate without a vehicle. You get far enough off the roads there and no one would be working a bird - tough terrain and quite desolate in most of the places I hunted.

heres the same discussion on ETIQUETTE on Georgias chat board. Its about respect for other hunters...

http://forum.gon.com/archive/index.php/t-59087.html

It is an old post but still applicable. Some people dont understand etiquette and I guess think only about themselves. I just cant understand that type of selfishness and greed for a 20 pound bird with a pea size brain!

heres a simple written treatise of turkey hunting etiquette. It basically states everything I was taught in my 40 years of chasing birds. Much of it on public land when I was younger and couldnt afford clubs or private land.
It is pretty simple easy and explains what has always historically been the RIGHT way to hunt public land. BY the way I didnt write it...but I sure as heck follow it...and have NO RESPECT for people who dont!:

A Treatise on Public Land Turkey Hunting Etiquette

Preface: Turkey hunting is a wonderful sport. Nothing get's ones heart pumping like a thundering gobble at the crack of dawn, the closing footsteps of a drumming gobbler on the lip of a ridge, or a gobbler in full strut, glistening in the sun. In today's world, turkey hunting is gaining in popularity and turkey populations are at peak levels; however, at the same time, access to land is getting harder to find. Have no fear though, there is plenty of public land available for everyone. That is, as long as everyone abides by some common sense public land etiquette.

Ch. 1: Do To Others As You Would Have Them Do To You

Turkey hunting is not deer hunting. Several hunters can enjoy a small patch of land while deer hunting; however, since most turkey hunting starts by locating a turkey by sound, an area that can hold several deer hunters may only be able to to comfortably hold one turkey hunter.

Rule # 1: If someone is parked at the gate you want to go into, then go to your backup spot.

The Logic: Most public land comes in chunks of 20,000-60,000 acres, so finding a different spot should not be that difficult. Technically (but not equitably), you have the same right to hunt that spot as the other guy, but why would you want to? So that the two of you can both rush towards the bird and spook it in your competitive greed? So that you can increase the chances of accidentally getting shot? So that you can ruin somebody's morning? The truth of the matter is this: the guy parked in that spot cared just a little bit more than you did to get up early and go to that spot. You should respect that, vow to get up earlier, and move along.

Another Way to look at it: Imagine that you got up early and were the first person to arrive at a hot spot. I mean, this spot is a honey hole. You are super pumped. Now, imagine that an XXX pulls up behind you, parks, ignores you and walks down the road, practically shadowing your every step. It's a pretty sick feeling eh? Like a hole in the pit of your stomach right? Why would you want to do that to someone else?

Rule #2: Do Not Call Out Of A Vehicle

Logic: If you are one of those guys that drives around, letting lose cackles, peacock screams, owl hoots, coyote howls,
car horn beeps, etc. then you will be reborn as a fly, and not just any fly, one of those that eats poop for a living. No lie.

Side Comment: Seriously, how lazy are you? Do you call that hunting?

Rule #3: Do Not Try to Work a Bird That Someone Else Is Working

Logic: Again, the theme of this chapter is to do to others as you would have them to do to you. Having another hunter come in on a hot bird is about the worst feeling ever. Yeah yeah, legally you have the same right to go after the bird, but what would your momma say if she knew what you were doing? You can't tell me that you don't feel like a tad bit of a bad word when doing this.
Chapter 2: Legitimate Hunting Tactics

Excerpt-Rule # 13: Hunting over corn is punishable by hanging.

Chapter 3: Love Thy Neighbor

Neighboring each and every parcel of public land is a thing known as private land.

Rule: Do not trespass onto that land!!!
Logic: Did you work hard to earn the money that bought that land? Did you pour blood, sweat and tears into? No

Ch. 4: Turkey SEASON

Turkey Season generally runs from the middle of March through the beginning of May. Turkey season does coincide with gun deer season. Turkey season does not begin in February.

If people could simply practice those simple rules then public land hunting could be just as good as private land hunting.

Basically..it is about respect. Respecting others and doing what is RIGHT.

People KNOW when they pull their truck up and park next to another that what they are doing IS NOT right...but they just DO NOT care..instead...all they think about is THEM getting a bird..at any cost...even if they are cutting off someone else...as long as THEY get their turkey.

Im sorry..but there is NO defending the indefensable.

These etiquettes have been the rules of hunting public land for over 40 years that I know of..and if you are not following them..then simply..you ARE in the wrong.

When I was younger my old man and mentor would kick my butt like a football if he ever caught me acting any other way. Today... SOME people just do not care.

When people say "if I hear a bird gobbling Im going after it no matter what"...it makes me sick. No ethics and no respect in my opinion.

Like it says..."do unto others as youd have done to yourself". It people could follow that simple rules there would be A LOT less problems!

There are very few situations that I find it acceptable to park at the same place as someone else. The only place I can think of is a spot in the nf I hunt that is the only access for 11 miles. If you would pull in where someone else is parked and go in, then your simply selfish, with few exceptions.

Also, if your listening from a gate where a truck is already parked, then that shows exactly the kind of hunter you are. There is literally never a time that any public land in the state will have a truck at every gate. If someone beats you to a spot, go somewhere else, who knows maybe you will find some birds you didn't know about.

by the way...here is even more written and published in the Alabama fish and game magazine:

HUNTING THE WMAS
The state’s WMAs offer a fine place to chase turkeys, but you do need to remember that other sportsmen are afield and have just as much right to be there as you.

I’ve hunted a number of WMAs over the past decade and now turkey hunt almost exclusively on public land. I’ve had few problems.

One common sense rule of etiquette for turkey hunting is to move on and find another place if someone beats you to where you wanted to hunt. You don’t park at the same pullout as someone else and hunt the same stretch of woods. It’s not only common courtesy, but also a safety factor.

An advantage to the WMAs is that most are quite large and there are plenty of places to hunt without competing with someone else.

If you dont know this rule or follow it...well you need to! It is the BASIC number 1 rule of public land hunting..and there really is no excuse not to. You are clearly in the wrong...whatever you may think!

Sorry...but this issue is my NUMBER 1 pet peeve with public land hunting..SELFISH IDIOTS!

I don't care if it's a million acres most hunters don't walk that far. Some do but I try to think about all scenarios and what could happen.
Even if a person wasn't on that bird at the time most likely the hunter would be in hearing distance and would be working his way back toward the bird. This could be very dangerous due to the other hunter coming from the opposite direction. They could end up facing each other and unaware of it. If I see a vehicle I don't even stop to listen. That's just the way I roll. crazy

Hate when I get beat to a favorite spot but that's just how it goes gotta keep moving... Had a guy do about the same to me and actually kept coming after I hit crow, owl, and made a crow in distress type to make sure they could tell it was a hunter... Still kept coming so I backed out to keep from getting shot by the moron. Next time I will hide behind a log or something and when they pass by try to shot the sky and give them a jump and maybe they will think twice before parking beside my ride lol.

When I first started hunting public land I ran into a situation. I took my wife hunting where I had heard a bird the week before. We were there on a dead end road and road and checked the whole road before stopping the truck. It gets daylight and several turkeys start gobbling and we head to the closest back up the rd a couple hundred yds. We walk 100 yds around the bend from where we parked and two old men came in and parked behind us. We talked to them and they told us to go to any bird we wanted they were sorry they didn't check the rd before stopping. One of the older gentleman was using a cane and had one leg. We told them to hunt the turkeys that were close to the rd and we would walk to the bird in the back across the swamp. There are right ways and wrong ways to handle every situation.

Would walk over a naked woman to get to a gobblin turkey!

scb this bird was never scared off I just slipped in behind another hunter and when I saw them I moved on. I actually found out that later they chased this bird to the next ridge but a dog ran through scaring it off. I walked down the road a couple miles and then came back and the hunters had already left and the bird was standing less than 75 yards from the truck in a select cut. This road use to have a couple parking area's that ran acouple miles but since they are logging in there their is only one then you have to hoof it in.

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.
