I bought some dog proofs and some 650s a couple weeks ago. Gotta make some anchors and figure out what I'm doing, this'll be a first for me.

I have been running a few DP's since August, I have caught 11 coons and 6 possums. I have noticed that after they see a buddy stuck in one they shy away from them, moved them around a lot, since I am new to it and I turkey hunt every day of the season, do you guys keep running them in turkey season?

Keep em out as often as you can check em, I can’t always go everyday so I just run em when I can

Never run traps 3 weeks before turkey season comes in to let everything settle down a bit from me being in there every day

I put two flat sets out today on a field road where I've been getting coyote pics every 2-3 nights. I'll put out 12 or more next week and all my DP traps.

We use a 3 inch wood screw and screw em to a tree

Set 9 DP's yesterday. Will move them around & pick them up around March 1st. I would love to trap coyote, bobcats and fox but would catch every yard dog in a 10 mile radius.

If you have that many yard dogs running your property then catching them may be just what you need to do
Use offset jaw traps and teach them to stay away via the sore foot method

Yep. I gonna try to get some coons too. I’d love to catch some yotes but not willing to do all the waxing, dyeing, ect. Hoping I can locate some already prepared. I think this would be so fun!

I stopped dyeing and waxing trap several years ago
I clean them free of all rust and spray them with a good enamel paint and it last a couple seasons or more
I’ve seen no difference in the catch ratio vs traditional methods

You are speaking the truth. I have 4 labs that are kennel dogs. They are good 99% of the time but once a year one will go on a walkabout. Same guy who owns the yard dogs has her in his yard or calls me to come get the pup. It isn't worth it to have him mad about sore footed dogs.

On a happy note, I have taken out 5 egg eaters on 200 acres. Will move traps this weekend and try to take out some more before nesting season.

I've caught all the neighborhood dogs. A few several times. One beagle 5 times mostly on blind sets. She's a rabbit chasing machine and only let's me pet her. I feed her cat food everytime so she's my buddy. Never seen a dog limp more than a couple days because of a trap

There's a fellow in Shelby county who makes/sells a quality trap bait for every critter. It's called "Wildman's Hammertime" bait. His name is James Smith....he's on Facebook.

Got a male bobcat today. Sorry guys I’m technology challenged so can’t post pictures. Ordered 4 more traps today so hopefully by next weekend I can start battling the coyote population better. Since Christmas I have shot 2 yotes deer hunting and trapped 2 over the last week. 👍. Unreal how many coyotes are out there…

Re: Its time to lay traps - 02/23/24 11:35 PM

No action for me since Tuesday. Just freshened things up and will start some additional traps about mile down the road probably early next week. I did see a set of tracks since the rain from earlier this morning.

Re: Its time to lay traps - 02/24/24 04:49 PM

No catch again. Moved and reset on fresh sign
Posted By: Swamp Monkey

Re: Its time to lay traps - 02/24/24 11:34 PM

What types of scent you been using left horn? Seems like beaver meat and little fox pee is the best combination that works for me.
Posted By: lefthorn

Re: Its time to lay traps - 02/25/24 04:06 AM

I’m using several different scents. Some traps get Hiawatha Valley Predator Bait while others get Caven’s Predator Bait Plus. Some traps get Irontrail trapline hound hell coyote gland, some get irontrail fox trot, some get urine. And one usually in the middle of the line gets cavens gusto

I use a bait and a lure at each set. Probably need to take notes on what catches to see if a certain bait or bait/lure combo works best
Posted By: lefthorn

Re: Its time to lay traps - 02/25/24 04:12 AM

Talked to a guy at Bass Pro today who said he couldn’t figure out how he wasn’t catching. Coyotes been coming to his trap every night. But traps not going off. Said he thought something must be getting under pan. He literally had to bang on trap to make it go off. Then he proceeded how he has been putting mesh pan covers under the trap and all!!

Doesn’t the name “pan cover” kind of give away how to use them??

Excellent. I’m waiting for the day I get more than one on the line. So far, only been one catch per day (not everyday mind you)

Re: Its time to lay traps - 02/26/24 10:23 PM

I would say when I set a new trap it is usually about day 4 before I catch something. I freshened these 2 traps up yesterday with just a globe of beaver meat in the hole. Amazing how many are out there. Got a friend that wants to call them and shoot em at night so I may take him soon as I have never done that.

Had 1 big boar coon this morning and had to remake a ground set that had been disturbed

Re: Its time to lay traps - 03/04/24 10:51 PM

Nothing today. I need a little rain to settle the soil so it’s blended better anyway. It’s hard to get the open traps blended natural looking on a new set. I will try again tomorrow and the next several days. Did see a different bobcat track today about 20 feet from one of the traps so maybe he will come back…

Wolf Fang earth anchors. You will have to buy a driver to put them in. In soft ground you can push them in with your foot and the coons will never move them.

Just set 5 traps. Let’s see how this week or so goes as my trapping/hunting is coming to an end. Just got notification we are losing the lease on the land so I’m bummed about that.

Re: Its time to lay traps - 03/12/24 06:02 PM

Well… I lost a trap and anchor. Not sure if it was a large coyote or a large dog but you could tell it wasn’t giving up! 🤷‍♂️. I guess if it’s a dog hopefully he gets home and someone can help it but if a coyote I guess it will eventually starve to death since he can’t sneak up on anything. First time this has happened…. Hate it for the animal.

Re: Its time to lay traps - 03/13/24 09:41 AM

Good job John

Went it yesterday afternoon and put fresh bait in my DP's rather than bait them in the AM
Mice have been absolutely brutal on this property
Ive had to put bait in every DP every day for two weeks now because the mice are cleaning them out and Ive never use one bag of bait in a season using more traps
This time Ive use 2 bags and started on a third
Hopefully the late afternoon baiting will help with some being left in the DP's when the coons come calling at night

I got female yote this morning. I pulled all my traps so may be a while before I can trap again due to losing permission/lease on the land. Total was 8 coyotes since Christmas. 3 males and 5 females and one lost trap.

Re: Its time to lay traps - 03/21/24 12:38 AM

Google dirt hole set help me

Lot of info on here you may can use - polwol and deadeye put on here

Pack your set down well around frame of trap - your hole needs to be at least 8-10 inch - i put peatmoss over my tounge and open area inside jaws then cover w dirt using sifter

So much detail

Another large female coon this morning - was worth the trouble. Lot of rain coming again - unset all traps. Nothing steped around yote traps - but they aint been showing up in road much either on camera - not even 1/month on camera. Coons were bouncing back though

Set beaver traps last Saturday. Caught first one Sunday. Just caught second last night. Trail cam pictures show at least one more. Hope to get it removed this weekend.

Re: Its time to lay traps - 03/27/24 11:10 PM

17 out of this spot. Probably busting dams and pulling traps tomorrow. Just set a cable restraint over a culvert with a beaver living in it between two houses. Really weird spot. He was smacking his tail inside the pipe when I set it. To scared to set anything else because of pets.

Caught this pair last night. Had an otter in a 330 perpendicular to the road the night before. Saw they had stopped up a 15” metal culvert so I set up 2 footholds on drowning cables. Previous job a couple of weeks ago everything came on 330’s at castor mounds or feed piles. Dam break with a foothold went untouched while the 330 produced 3 adults with one pregnant female carrying 2 kits.

Female this morning was nursing so there is a couple more dying as we speak.

This location they have a 36” plastic culvert with debris 1’ high for 10-15 feet inside the pipe. If I have to set it it’s going to be tough water is deep and the mud (slop) is deeper. They brought an excavator in and replaced the culvert before removing the beaver.

ALWAYS remove the beaver first. Digging things out is temporary at best and makes the trappers job more difficult.

Re: Its time to lay traps - 03/29/24 03:01 AM

I ran my hand in a culvert running into a pond earlier. Felt something and thought it was trash. Pulled it out and a grass carp dissolved all around. I didn't puke but did start gagging pretty bad

PSA-if you get the 4 coiled No-BS Beaver traps, get the one hand setters too. Managed to get my thumb in one today setting one to get some measurements. Luckily it wasn’t a full send snap but believe me, the lock up is intense. Couldn’t step on the levers and managed to get some regular setters on the levers enough to get loose. Took a couple of minutes and I gave a 1/4” intention the width of the jaw face on both sides of my thumb.

Lol, hope I don't have to do anymore otter wrestling. I ended up twisting a jacket up like you would a wet towel to pop someone. Smacked him in the neck and it wrapped around him long enough for me to grab him. Wasn't to hard to do since he kept trying to stab me in the face.

I like the conibear setters that work like a caulk gun for that reason also. Being able to use them with one hand could really get a fella out of a bind

Re: Its time to lay traps - 04/01/24 03:45 PM

I've got plenty of castor and coyote bait. Fixing to catch some coyotes before it gets miserable hot. Welded up a bunch of drags with 6ft of chain to use instead of anchors. Kind of excited to try something different. I'll be in the woods mostly so I think it will work good. I'll mainly be using blind sets so I want to keep my trails intact best I can

Re: Its time to lay traps - 05/01/24 11:26 AM

I've had 30 traps out since last Saturday and have only picked up 8 opossums and one racoon. Can't get to some of my favorite spots because I was scaring to many hens off nests trying to get back their. I haven't ever found a turkey nest in my food plots and this year they seem to be in every field.
