I came close to quitting having primarily hunted WMA's, Wheeler Refuge, and Bankhead. I consistently killed deer but had to hunt very hard only killing the typical 115" to 130" deer for the last 30 years.I now have a 6 year lease on some private land along the Tenn. River in Morgan County with some great potential. I'm still wanting to kill that 150" deer, so I'm going to hang in there!! I don't know where you hunt but if there is not consistently 150" deer killed in your area is a recipe for disaster. You just knocked a few counties off the map with that. There are areas ate up with deer that do not produce 150 class deer but, not sure how it's a disaster?? I was referring to setting unobtainable goals. As you said, there are a lot of counties that don't consistently produce these deer and if you hold out for one, well, that is where the disaster will come in. The fun will leave and he will never obtain his goal. I was going to say to CDillard, killing 115-130" deer is a great accomplishment in AL. Anything over 130" is on the upper end of the bell curve, and very hard to do. Killing a 150", although that's a good goal to have, will not be met by many people in AL. Yep he should try hunting in Mobile County where a 115" deer is almost a once in a lifetime deer People get to caught up in B&C scores. Just hunt for the best in your area you can realistically hope to kill and enjoy the hunt....

I'm surprised at all the upset and disappointed hunters out there. Hunting is my time to think quietly and reflect on the crop year we just had and what we did wrong and what we can do better. But that's just me.
Quietly killing turkeys where youre not!!! My tank full of give a fraks been runnin on empty I'm the paterfamilias

I was going to say, I just love walking and sitting in the woods. I don't care if I see anything or not some days. It's a great time to talk to God.

Hunting is pretty much like everything else...you get out of it what you put into it. I'm guilty as the next guy of this.
I don't burn for it as much as I used to, but that's probably got a lot to do with the amount of work I put into it now. I used to do most of the planting on our club, since I had one of the only tractors (or one of the only tractors that someone was willing to bring to the club). I fixed roads with it. I cleared roads. I built shooting houses, then drilled the holes for the shooting house poles with my tractor auger. Now, the club is well established. It doesn't need anymore shooting houses built. It doesn't need as many roads fixed. There are a lot more members helping out now that own and are willing to bring tractors. So, I don't do nearly the work every season that I used to. I'd guess that's a lot of it.
Plus, my son is 9 now, and hasn't shown a lot of interest in it to this point. I'd rather spend time with him than spending time by myself in a tree.

I love to hunt anything, ducks, deer, coons, rabbits, doves.... etc. etc.. I just love to hunt. Same way with fishing, bass, crappie.... it don't matter, I love to hunt and fish. If I had to quit I would die inside, I swear I would

I love my family and like my job but sometimes I just want to be alone. I hunt for therapy as much as anything. Seeing and killing a deer is just a bonus. x2

I never really quit but probably only went a half duzen times in the decade of the nineties. I was a self employed sub contractor and worked on Saturdays. Work was plentiful and you had to get after it while the getting was good. Bad part about it was at that time I could afford to have anything I needed ( practical hunting items and such ) and to be in a great club. I'm not a fanatic at deer hunting but I go as often as I can and just love being in the peacefulness of the woods. It is what it is. Just a hobby not my life.

I enjoy the opportunity to see pretty much anything in the woods. I am always amazed at what happens on pretty much every hunt. I don't know if I would enjoy it as much if I always hunted alone, but I really enjoy the time I spend with my son or friends.

I quit fishing when I started turkey hunting. I cant say for sure that it was turkey hunting that took its place but that's around the time frame. I have lakes all around me and could go any time but for some reason I couldnt care less. I hate it because I used to love it but for some reason I choose not to go.
As far as deer hunting, I hope I never lose interest. Right now my oldest son really likes going. My youngest son will go but doesn't have that fire. He's young so I'm not trying to force it on him.
I'm with Matt on this. If all I could shoot was nannies, I'd be happy. I like seeing bucks but a field full of venison suites me just fine. But I'm also with Bill. If I didn't have good property and only saw a handful of deer per season, I could see it being easy to lose interest.
I like the shooting aspect of hunting probably more than putting in time for scouting and hunting where ol'big boy is. Making a well placed shot on a doe at 40yds with a bow or 200yds+ with a rifle excites the crap outta me. My 12yr old putting a perfectly placed 120gr 7mm08 on a doe at 200+yds last weekend reminds me that he can shoot in the field as good as he can at the range. That makes me happy happy happy.
If I ever were to lose interest I would NEVER sale all my guns. Might need them for non-hunting reasons.
To the OP, take up basket weaving or something. Google FreakerUSA. I met that crazy fella and he's probably a multimillionaire now. All because he took a weaving class and designed a unique koozie. Good idea my granddad is an excellent basket weaver and makes several thousand $$'s per year doing that! I didn't sell all my guns just my deer rifles bow and tree stands. I don't use them so why keep them. I won't quit hunting but I am going to concentrate on small game and I plan on getting my turkey grand slam this spring. Deer hunting just don't do it for me anymore. Good to see I'm not the only one. You need to come go squirrel hunting with us and the dogs. You'd probably enjoy that. I still deer hunt but just to offset the price of store bought meat
We will burn that bridge when we get there

I used to hunt them so hard and spend so much time at the club, even during off season, I'm really surprised my wife (girlfriend at the time) stuck with me. It paid off. I killed lots of deer. I killed at least a doe, on opening day, for about 8 years straight. I killed lots of bucks during that time too. I slowed down considerably when the kids were born, to the point if barely going more than a few times a season. My oldest boy (9) is really into it and my twins (7) are wanting to go. As long as I'm spending time with them, I'm happy.

I thought about not putting a penny in my place for one year and put that money toward a trophy club or payed hunt for my boys. We'd prob kill just as many hunting a grown up greenfield with volunteer clover and ryegrass around here anyway.

I don't hunt near as hard as I have in the past, but I still love to get after em.I got back into traditional archery this year, and it has really got me in the spirit of it.We just buried one of my lifelong hunting buddies today, and it will never be the same again, but I don't think I would ever quit.
I would rather be turkey hunting

I used to love deer hunting more than anything,my dad has always been a big turkey hunter and the older I got the more I loved to hunt turkeys, now I deer hunt just to have something to do,I'd much rather turkey, duck and dove hunt,I've hunted the same land my whole life so I'm sure that's got a lot to do with why I've lost interest,it's also gotten so expensive it just about ain't worth it to me anymore
