Okay. I've finally started seeing more new scrapes. Some new rubs too. I watched a bachelor group of 4 yesterday. Two 3 year olds were sparring some and one buck worked a scrape there in the plot I was on. It was a really good hunt, but I'm just getting more and more picky.
Any other hunters seeing some rutting activity? It's a strong pre-rut at my place.

Don't know. I remember the first place we hunted on was in Pike county 1997 and when we first started seeing scrapes we didn't know what in the world they were. Thought it might have been turkey or where the deer might have been fighting. In that sandy dirt they had scrapes as big as car hoods. 2 seasons gone from Pike county but they should be getting ready.

It be's that way sometimes.

My grandson had 6 or 7 does around him this afternoon and a cowhorn spike was acting froggy up there. Maybe in a week or two the bigger bucks will start up.

Yea. Pretty much the usual. I'm anxious though! Hearing all the awesome stories from our friends north of us gets me ready! Can't wait to see how those Feb days work out.

I had a great hunt yesterday afternoon, saw four does get harassed by a spike, then several bucks came into the field, not really together, but very far apart. I saw a couple 3yo bucks spar and some smaller bucks spar, not real fighting though. The does were more interested in feeding and not at all interested with the spike. The bucks were not to territorial but the older ones had split up somewhat. I would guess 2 weeks or more away before the older class bucks get caught up in rutting activities.

Not hunting up there this year but that would be about right from what I've seen in the past for the older bucks, the younger ones always start a couple weeks earlier.

Yea. My hunting buddy had a doe cross a 100 yd wide strip of cutover, a 6 pt came down the same trail a couple minutes later, and then a 4 year old 8 point was about 20 minutes later down the same trail. He put him down. Do yall think that was coincidental or was she close to being hot or what?

As for me, I also saw some young bucks harassing does. No mature bucks showed.

There was a nice 9 and 8 point killed in NW Pike co on Saturday afternoon, the first good deer this year. A youngster killed a 14" 8 point yesterday afternoon, but it was his first deer.

I hunted Pike Co. east of Brundidge Saturday. Saw lots of does and a few small bucks didn't see interest between the bucks and does. Saw several scrapes in the woods but no chasing.

I'm glad we're getting the extra 10 days.

Saw a four point running full tilt head down in the field along the side of hwy 29 this morning just inside the Troy city limits. He was moving stupid like he smelled something that made him forget to look where he was going. I've also seen a few roadkill small bucks in the county the past week.

If I had to pick one day to hunt in Pike County and kill a buck, it would be MLK day.

Dang it. I'm trying to decide to hunt the last week of January or Feb. Which one will be the best?

I would look at the moon, and pick whichever week I felt offered the best chance of day time movement.

Where about in Pike county are you going to be?

Forecast looks crappy next Monday. Historically this weekend is great.

I slipped in the woods yesterday afternoon. I spooked a doe off getting to the field, had a nice 3yo 9pt come out about 4:20, he really didn't feed much, never had his nose down or his head up, kinda just kept walking through the field and out, but he was walking with the wind at his back so I doubt he was following scent. Might have just been covering some ground and checking some scrapes. Then I had a spike come out and work a few scrapes along the edge of the field then he fed for 20 minutes.

Hunted a good bit this weekend. Saw 2 spikes checking and working scrapes Friday afternoon. Had a buddy hunting with me Saturday he saw a young 6 pt and a doe in a food plot together, they came in 50-60 yards apart fed with no action for a while then the six point went over to get a sniff and the doe ran to the far end. Saw 4 does feeding Saturday afternoon, no bucks.

Was windy Sunday morning, I saw 3 does stand up and mill around for maybe 5 minutes before bedding back down in a clearcut before getting down for Sunday school, no bucks.

Lots more scrapes popping up, you can tell the ones that being utilized are being freshened up almost daily, others are basically being left alone.

A few mature bucks are cruising and showing themselves, but the overall deer movement is way down this past week.

Saw three different 8 pts dogging does today. Most rut action I've seen in a long time. Of course the big shooter was the only one I could not get a clear shot at. Great hunt though.
