Used in woods and for fields out to 300 yards. Which scope and magnification? Either has to be Leupold or Vortex. Of the two, which one and what magnification? And yes, it has to be Leupold or Vortex. Thanks for the help.

Vortex. I dislike leupold ever since my reticle started walking. I know you said between the two but have you ever looked through a meopta? And heavy duplex covers too much of your target at long ranges.
Two roads diverged in the woods and I took the one with deep ruts, hills and mud.It may be bumpy but WHAT A RIDE!

The 3.5-10 suggestion is a good one minus the 50mm. You could go to Leuplod's custom shop on their web site and get them to build ya a 2.5-8 with heavy duplex and you'll have a great package. Here's a possibility, that little lighted dot is mighty fine. http://i1057.photobucket.com/albums/t389/Paxamus/DSC_2988_zpslcglolz7.jpg

Not for hunting purposes and certainly not for 300 yards. You can't hit anything if you can't see your crosshairs. Add woods or low light conditions to the mix and you will be glad you have the heavies.

And heavy duplex covers too much of your target at long ranges. He said 300 yards max not a problem. Heavies are all I'll have, nothin' better in heavy timber. I have them on three rifles I shoot less than 1" groups with @ 100 yds. They are great for killing deer, not long range bench rest.

2.5x10x50 second goal point. If you can't find one in a 50, Ziess makes a 2.5x10x42 second focal point that is a great scope for less than 1k.

I think the best all-purpose scope made is a VX-6 2-12x42 Can be had with the cool little fire dot too but not heavies .

They are heavier than a regular duplex. I don't ever pay any attention to the crosshairs when that little red dot is on but I guess they still subconsciously guide my eyes to the center of the scope. If they were finer they may not do that as well. I wouldn't wanna shoot with nothing there but the little dot.

I think the Vortex 4-12x44 is perfect, but I'd take that same scope in a Leupold too. Would be tickled with either one. Easier to find 4-12x40 (as opposed to the 44mm), and that would be fine too. But if you can find the 44, it's the perfect "middle ground".

Are they second focal plane or first?

Second focal plane. They stay the same no matter what the magnification Little heavier than normal duplex with a fire dot would be hard to beat for sure. Ya got my curiosity up now.

I'll let you test drive it Deal. One of those lighted 1-6 would be sweet on the "bush hog".

Get the German #4 in the vx6. Problem solved. If the interior sections aren't heavy it doesn't matter. I love the heavy duplex with the 4 very heavy outer section and thick inners. The outer section automatically brings your eye to center and the center section that is heavy enough to see quickly in thick stuff or low light. Once ya go heavy, ya never go back.
