My question which caused quiet a stir a DNR meeting was when are we going to have a hen turkey season ? They were outraged that I would even ask that question and assured me that there would never be a hen turkey killed legally in the state of Georgia. My next question was how many chics are raised per hen vs fawns per doe ? ( In my area we have far more turkeys than deer ) They tried to dodge the question so my next question was..Could this possibly have anything to do with the fact that there are more insurance claims related to deer than turkey and at that point I was pretty much told that I was out of line and that they did not want to hear any more of my false allegations.

End result is that DNR is political puppets in the hands of the insurance companies. They can make the season 6 months long and encourage us to shoot every doe that we see, ultimately it is up to us as hunters and sportsmen. I help people manage properties and I hunt multiple states every year and my best advice for everyone is to lay off the doe harvest. In todays times in most all of North America, if you are harvesting more does than bucks, you are making a big mistake.
Completely agree. But getting your neighbors to buy in to the same ideas is where we have the disconnect. Just because DNR gives you a full season worth of doe days does not make it necessary to shoot one a day. But that is exactly what they would like you to do. We have not shot a doe in 3 years on our property and a major landowner to our north (6800 acres) has not killed one in 5 years. Numbers are stable, but not increasing due to two things. Other neighbors shooting every time they go in the woods and coyotes. Sometimes you have to tell the kids "no".

Oh, I've asked this question on here too, and you'd have thought I insulted a fella's religion, mother, and wife all at the same time. grin

Personally what I would like to see is bow season start a little later, maybe Nov. 1st. Have a longer muzzle loader season, maybe from Dec. 1 to Jan. Then have the rifle season through Jan 31. I would love to have an extra 2 weeks in Feb., because the part of Jackson Co. I'm in always has a late rut. I would even be up for having to buy a 2 week special permit bow/muzzle loader only. Doe days probably do need to be limited and for what it's worth, enforcement of the 3 bucks only would be a big help. I'm sure we all know people that don't abide by that, but that's a totally different subject.

How long have we had a February hunting season? I think this is the second year so not enough time to see if it is working well. Before the open doe season I always heard people say the season should be open to kill off some of the exuberant amount of doe. Now we need to get rid of it is what I hear. Mainly on this forum. I have hunted in some places that were tough and would only see a handful of deer a season. I have also hunted in places that had great habitat and seen few deer. All of this was before the open doe season. I believe deer population has a lot more to do with which part of the state you are hunting in. I don't like taking 10 days out of December. I enjoy hunting and have success in the first part of December. The long rifle season is what I prepare for. This is when I have the time to reap the fruits of my labor. Some times there is not a lot of fruit to harvest as far as antlers. Then again it has always been that way.

Thinning the heard to reduce deer to vehicle encounters is something I have no problem with. Tare up a car or two hitting those things and you'll know why.

Hunt the way you hunt and I'll hunt the way I hunt. I am going to have a good tome regardless. If you're not having fun don't blame it on me.

Jared, I'm not telling you how to hunt. These are my opinions, thus the use of me/I. Good luck.

Some hunters are like democrats... whatever the government says or allows is what they will do. They can't nor won't think for themselves.

Stop shooting does if the deer numbers are low. It' so simple!!

Again... greed, a lack of trigger restraint, discipline and a lack of concern for anyone or anything other than their desires.
