You young fellows are lucky you don't have to get out there at 5:00 and milk cows on these bitter cold mornings like I had to do when I was young. Y'all don't know how good you've got it. When I was your age . . . .

~~~
OK, men. Let's start a good "When I was your age" thread for these younger guys.
When I was your age I could go to school and park in the parking lot with a Marlin 30-30 hanging on the gun rack of my truck and noone ever said a word about it.I also had the privilege of listening to real country music.
.....Whenever our home room teacher needed to open a package, she would ask the class "Will one of you boys let me borrow your pocket knife?".
I had to run outside and turn the antenna to swap between our 4 channels.
That not been to long ago. I was a senior in 2003 and we carry out rifles and shotguns to school and always had a pocket knife. Times have changed real quick
When I was your age, the biggest problems in school were chewing gum in class and smoking in the bathrooms.
We didn't have to smoke in the bathroom..We had a smoking area.You could also count on that gun in your truck being there when you got back.
We sold oranges for FFA for a chance to win guns & knives.We also traded knives with some of the teachers & had a gun in the back glass of our trucks all the times.
I graduated in 2002 from highschool. I had to keep rifles out of sight but nobody woukd have a cow if thry knew it was in my truck. I understand your comment about "don't know how good they have it" but I disagree. The physical labor part may be better but the things and roads kids have to navigate today arw FAR tougher than anything physical labor could throw at them. The physical labor would do kids some good in todays age but it simply is not abailable to kids today.
The life choices and decisions about drugs, sex, and alcohol come at a far younger age. Heck, most have to fend off those decisions in middle school, not late high school or college or heck even out of school and working. I believe it is much harder on kids today. Physical stresses are quite easy to overcome. The spiritual and emotional ones are the dofficulty, and that is where the problem lies to me. How well would you old timers have done if you had the same options when you were young? Instead of the Sears catalogue for the devious act of peeping on women you had a plethra of the most graphic and bizzare porn at your finger tips with basically no way for parents to physically block you use? I would guess you would have went about the same way some of the kids go today, although in a smaller percentage becuase the family was stronger back them.
I am 31 with 3 young children and it scares the crap out of me.
When I was a young, your parents could write you a permission to take to high school for you to go take smoke breaks during the school day...
I remember the good old days when we would go hunting before school and still have the gun in the gun rack when we got to school and still have our Buck knives on our belts when we went in, and you know we had fights all the time and no one ever got shot or stabbed, it amazes me how much times have changed and not for the better for the most part...
I actually had it pretty easy growing up in the 1980s, but I like to put on and claim I grew up hard on the farm in front of my son. My boy says whenever an older person begins a sentence with "When I was your age" or "Back in my day," he knows there's some bullsh!t coming next. Can y'all believe that???
Probably becuae he was used to hearing stuff like having to wrap bared wire around your feet for traction becuase you had to walk to school in the snow and it was uphill both ways. Or at least thats how it was told to me.
When I was your age...we didn't get 2 hour delays because it "might" flurry.
When I was your age, my daddy had never heard of child labor laws. If he didn't work me when I was out of school, my granddaddy did. I started working when I was 12 years old and I've never stopped. Pulled wire for dads electrical business, mixed mud and toted blocks for my grandpa. I appreciate it more than ever now. Taught me the value of working. My kids roll their eyes and dont believe me when I tell them I worked in the 5th and 6th grade.
i had been driving a tractor on the farm for 6 years, when i wasn't at school/football/baseball (started at 10 y.o. child labor laws???? i was raised with intention of "cheap" farm labor...any raise in pay pleas were met with "room & board, insurance, food" & later "car, gas, date $$"
experience is a freakin' awesome teacher....
Back in the day, I spent Spring Breaks helping my uncle plant corn for his dairy cows. Also had to milk those suckers 3 times a day. 12 midnight, 8 am & 4 pm. Carried a gun in trunk of car with no problems, Winter break as they call it now was Christmas holidays back then. Went to school during category 1 & 2 hurricanes unless it was going to be a direct hit on the area. Snow days? What the hell were those. Went to school even when it snowed. I worked 4 to 5 yards for spending money early as 9 years old. Mother collected S&H green stamps. I hated licking those blasted things to put in the books. During the fall (harvest time), my sister, brother & I would sit in den at night shelling butter beans, purple hull peas and anything else mother put up in the pantry. Worked a many a afternoon after school baling hay and cutting silage. There was no ritalin for ADDS. We had Daddy's belt for that. That was his lie detector, and if leather cleared the last belt loop and you were still lying, God help you, cause you were gonna get you butt tore up. Nap time. cool
I had to walk to school barefoot in the snow. up hill both ways and all I had to eat was a cold biscuit.
I did have to walk home from school when I was in elementary school but it was only about 2 miles. Can you imagine the fits people would have these days if a 6 or 7 year old 1st grade kid walked 2 miles home after school and crossed 2 busy roads?
