You young fellows are lucky you don't have to get out there at 5:00 and milk cows on these bitter cold mornings like I had to do when I was young. Y'all don't know how good you've got it. When I was your age . . . .
~~~
OK, men. Let's start a good "When I was your age" thread for these younger guys.
When I was your age I could go to school and park in the parking lot with a Marlin 30-30 hanging on the gun rack of my truck and noone ever said a word about it.I also had the privilege of listening to real country music.
Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation,whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life;of whom shall I be afraid?
I had to run outside and turn the antenna to swap between our 4 channels.
That not been to long ago. I was a senior in 2003 and we carry out rifles and shotguns to school and always had a pocket knife. Times have changed real quick
When I was your age, the biggest problems in school were chewing gum in class and smoking in the bathrooms.
We didn't have to smoke in the bathroom..We had a smoking area.You could also count on that gun in your truck being there when you got back.
When I was a young, your parents could write you a permission to take to high school for you to go take smoke breaks during the school day...
I remember the good old days when we would go hunting before school and still have the gun in the gun rack when we got to school and still have our Buck knives on our belts when we went in, and you know we had fights all the time and no one ever got shot or stabbed, it amazes me how much times have changed and not for the better for the most part...
When I was your age, my daddy had never heard of child labor laws. If he didn't work me when I was out of school, my granddaddy did. I started working when I was 12 years old and I've never stopped. Pulled wire for dads electrical business, mixed mud and toted blocks for my grandpa. I appreciate it more than ever now. Taught me the value of working. My kids roll their eyes and dont believe me when I tell them I worked in the 5th and 6th grade.
i had been driving a tractor on the farm for 6 years, when i wasn't at school/football/baseball (started at 10 y.o. child labor laws???? i was raised with intention of "cheap" farm labor...any raise in pay pleas were met with "room & board, insurance, food" & later "car, gas, date $$"
experience is a freakin' awesome teacher....
Back in the day, I spent Spring Breaks helping my uncle plant corn for his dairy cows. Also had to milk those suckers 3 times a day. 12 midnight, 8 am & 4 pm. Carried a gun in trunk of car with no problems, Winter break as they call it now was Christmas holidays back then. Went to school during category 1 & 2 hurricanes unless it was going to be a direct hit on the area. Snow days? What the hell were those. Went to school even when it snowed. I worked 4 to 5 yards for spending money early as 9 years old. Mother collected S&H green stamps. I hated licking those blasted things to put in the books. During the fall (harvest time), my sister, brother & I would sit in den at night shelling butter beans, purple hull peas and anything else mother put up in the pantry. Worked a many a afternoon after school baling hay and cutting silage. There was no ritalin for ADDS. We had Daddy's belt for that. That was his lie detector, and if leather cleared the last belt loop and you were still lying, God help you, cause you were gonna get you butt tore up. Nap time.
