I’m becoming more and more convinced that yotes are attacking grown, healthy deer. I’m thinking it may be big males doing it but it could be them working in packs too I suppose. I found this pile of hair out here today and I feel pretty sure that it's hair from a deer’s arse…I’ve seen this numerous times here at my place over the last few years and even found the deer the hair came from in one instance. It was a young buck (1 ˝) that had been taken down. I’ve just had some yotes recently move in and show up on camera too and I’m finding fresh scat. I’ve only gotten a few crappy pics of them so I’m not for sure if its just one or a pack that’s coming through but we’re about to find out…..Yote traps deployed. wink

If so it's more likely wild dogs or coy dogs. We had some some coy dogs on a dairy farm in maplesville a few years ago. They was black & gray and bigger than a German shepherd. Meaner than pit bulls and wasn't afraid of humans at all.

My opinions and comments are my own. They do not reflect the position or political opinions of Aldeer or any of the Aldeer administration.

A pair of coyotes can and do take down adult deer and according to one study I read they kill 4 of every 10 fawns born.
I hope the traps work for you.

I think it may be a big male coming through. I found one pile of yote turds that looked like it came out of a great dane. I think he’s doing too much piddlin in my sanctuary and may be stressing the deer that usually bed there. Deer numbers are not what they usually are…..I’m wondering if a big male traveling through on a routine basis like this and actively pursuing them would push doe groups out of a bedding area……I'm thinking it may have.

Those "studies" are built around some predetermined results that someone paid to have printed.

That's not necessarily true.
I don't believe they kill as many as they often get blamed for.
We had 18 new calves this year, I found two dead, eaten by coyotes. One for sure killed by coyotes. The other I think was still born. That leaves 16 thriving and healthy calves among a large population of coyotes.

That’s a similar concept to what I think may be happening here at my place with grown deer being attacked. I don’t think its every yote in the woods….just a select few older males or maybe even an older female. I’m doubting that a young dog would attack a grown healthy deer. It also could be older deer that are sick or wounded in some fashion too. That’s a definite possibility and one that’s probably more plausible than them attacking healthy deer. I still think that the daily routine of hunting through the main bedding area may stress the deer though and keep them from being able to enjoy the sanctuary it normally provides them. The bedding is what you would consider a 100 acre “pocket” of woods too so it wouldn’t be hard to run the deer completely out.

As I mentioned before too, the big mean coy dogs. Thank God nature makes them sterile. Those mutated freaks could breed themselves into a killer herd, otherwise.

I have very few fawns on camera this year compared to years past. Have several groups of 3-4 mature does with 1 fawn in group. Started seeing yote tracks over the summer and now getting them on camera on north and south end of property.

Around 3 years ago I started finding many more remains of adult deer.
Not likely unrecoverd shot deer because I border 2500 acres of private land and the owner doesn't hunt. At the same time I see a lot of deer with split ears that I assume were caused by yotes. My dad doesn't hunt but has killed 10+ every year off the back porch for 3 or 4 years. Defiantly an issue at my place

I hunt public land. I see coyotes a good bit at bankhead and tva land. I will spoil a hunt just to shoot a coyote. Seems like i always see them when i cant get a shot in time. I killed one off hobbs island rd last year. He was sneaking up on turkey.

Thats why when you see one you put it down right then. Killed 5 last year, everyone of them first thing in the a.m.

Dont be saying "Man if I shoot now its going to mess my hunt up." If you dont shoot it right then, they'll sure mess your hunts (plural) up.

Last year I was watching a doe and fawn hanging out 100 yards from my stand. On another shooting lane a coyote was coming in and he was about 100 yards from them and 100 yards from me with a rise between them. I put the crosshairs on him as he stopped for a second. He took a 140 grain bullet between the eyes and other then some kicking it was over. The doe and fawn stuck around for another 20 minutes before moving along. Don't be afraid of ruining your hunt by shooting a coyote.

I tried to find the study I referenced earlier but couldn't find it. It was over ten years ago but if I remember correctly it was done by a game biologist working at U.C. Davis.

They eat deer. Fawns... full grown... doesn't make any difference once they figure it out. They work in pairs or more and just like predators from the last 350 million years they bite the arse end of the deer until it can't go any further then they go in for the kill.

They eat turkeys too.

I am in possession of a collection of old books. As in very old and probably should be in museum somewhere kinda old. A majority on hunting. A majority of those on Waterfowl. However, included are a couple real treasures written about hunting out west in the late 1800's and early 1900's. One is 1887. They are fascinating but difficult to read because they are not in our typical 4th Grade English. I have never seen a copy of these on the internet or elsewhere. EVER. Do not know of any others to be in existence and I look quite frequently for this type thing. The interest of that day was obviously reading about the exploits of the hunters, trappers and Indian Fighters and what it was like after you left Ft Smith Arkansas and ventured into the American West.

There are comments scattered throughout these 6-8 books on Coyotes. including descriptions of working pairs taking down "Deer". I would say that is likely Mule Deer. In the same books they would say the deer "hop". Some say they are grey, etc. but all refer to them as just "deer".

Animals don't evolve much in just 150 years. Pretty sure Coyotes.. they've always killed deer. Everyone just got brainwashed by the DCNR in the 1970's that claimed they didn't significantly impact the deer population. I personally think that was around the same time they were putting laws and regulations on people trapping. They didn't want to deal with canine trapping and having people get the neighbor's dogs caught, etc. so they claimed there was no reason to catch the coyotes they were harmless. That's my conspiracy theory. Now we are overrun with them.

No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

Years ago, just about every doe group would be a mature doe with her last year's doe fawn and one or two spotted fawns. Now I see lots of does without fawns. One afternoon last week, I watched 18 deer in a food plot. 3 young bucks, 10 does and only 5 fawns. Lots of coyotes around, something is taking out a lot of fawns
