i think you SHOULD have to pass some sort of proficency class to be able to get your permit. i don't think some people are capable (physically or mentally) of safely carrying a loaded weapon around other people. you have to pass hunters-ed to get your hunting license (for a good reason), so why should carrying a pistol in public be any less important? with that said, i don't think it's fair to charge ANYTHING for the right to carry, and it should be given to you as quickly as you can pass the certification class.

Hunting is not a right guarantied by the Constitution of the United States. The Constitution doesn't say you can possess a firearm if you can pass a test.

Would you have learned as much if I just tried to tell you what I know about the subject?
My Dad used to say, "One person showing the way is worth more than ten people trying to tell someone the way."
Did you find it interesting that the test case for the law against carrying a concealed pistol involved a defendant who was a sheriff named Reid whose life had been threatened?
How about the part where the Alabama Supreme Court said a sheriff didn't need to carry a gun at all? Funny how they want to hold on to the ban on concealed pistols while ignoring that part ain't it?
I could tell you about it, but I figure you will be more likely to believe it if you read it for yourself.
It's there if you want to read it. Take it or leave it. I'm just ribbing ya. I find your posts very informative...sometimes a bit much to consume in one sitting, but always informative. I enjoy debating with anyone who can make a point like an adult and not resort to namecalling and other childishness.

They do the same in Florida. The department of agriculture handles CCL. - You must be a legal citizen - You can't have any felonies or domestic violence - You must either take a training class, or show proof that you have had firearms training. ( Thanks you DD214 ) - Fingerprinted - Photo Taken - Application Filled out - $117 app fee All of this, can be done if you make an appointment and a local office and you get your license, in a few weeks, in the mail. I do agree, to carry concealed, you should have to atleast show that you are competent through either a course or prior training.

I'm a citizen and show you my drivers license. Good enough. Totally agree, and I agree with 49er on what he posted. We shouldn't HAVE to jump through the hoops. But we do, unfortunately.

It is definitely a lot of hoops to jump through, but I do agree with the training they require. My appointment, is on Monday, so I will get to see how bad the experience is.

Why do they need to get another photo. They have it on the DL. And fingerprinting...good grief...didn't realize being booked was a prerequisite for getting a little plastic card that says one can carry a weapon. For the love, whadya gotta do to purchase a firearm. Give your right nut?

For the love, whadya gotta do to purchase a firearm. Give your right nut? They don't issue a permit, they issue a license in Florida. It looks just like a drivers license, hence the picture. Not sure why they fingerprint. The state of FL, has a waiting period of 3 days for firearm purchases and some counties add 2 days to it. However, if you have your CCL, there is no waiting period.

morgan county issues a card that looks exactly like a dl. Mine 2 years ago had my dl number AND my ssn on it! I redacted them off and dared a leo to question it. When i renewed last year, the person issueing it said lots of folks had issues with those nubmers being on it. The permit/card had a number issued to it..all they had to do was cross ref that number to a database and they'd have all the other info...good grief. Anyways, i got off track...we (any county in America) don't have enough $$ to force and oversee a proficiency course. If they did that, they would have to raise the "fee" (tax) so high, i'd just carry openly and take my chances on carrying concealed.
The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

Just got back, from applying for my CCL in Florida. Not to bad, took about 20mins. One thing, I was told to make an appointment and I did this a month ago. However, I could have just walked in a month ago and not worried about the appointment. - $117.00 - Filled out app online - They print out app and notarize it - Finger print you - Take your photograph - Told me I was good and would have it in 3 weeks or less - Is good for 7 years

$117 for 7 years isn't very bad at all. Less than $17 annually. Plus they are reciprocal with more states than most.
