A lot of times when there is pedicle damage that creates a wild antler, there may also be a cranial abscess that goes with it. Makes me wonder if there isn't an abscess that has spread to the base of the skull where that neck muscle attaches.
If this is the first season that atrophy has been present, I wouldn't be shocked for him to die after casting his antlers this year.

I'd just look it over real good. I would imagine all his troubles would be from the neck up. Get the grease hot and let'er rip.

Had a deer one time, when I cleaned it had some kind of a pus looking stuff inside of it, took it to a deer processing buddy of mine to ask him if he ever seen it. He said no, called some biologist from the state to come look at it. They said it was an infection from a disease the deer had that summer. Told me the meat would be fine to eat if you cooked it well. I did not eat any of it? Tried , but the thought was just too much! A buddy of mine killed a good buck one time that was like that, but he had small round balls of pus all over his body from the head to his tail when we skinned him out and he smelled really bad....we didn't eat any of that either and the river was up so we dumped the entire body in the river.....
