What do the Indians do differently to make them go for convenience stores and Hotels? Before you only saw them and their families working them. Now they Americans quite a bit. I just don’t understand how Americans can’t make it anymore in them.

I think plenty of Americans still own stores like that. Regarding the Indian thing, a lot of it has to do with the caste system in India, that is somewhat being brought over here with them. The folks that you see running those businesses are the (Stay with me here) "Businessman class", which is below the "Warrior" class, which is below the "Brahmin" class.

The folks in the "Businessman class" are basically limited careerwise in India to (stay with me here again grin) to running businesses. So that's basically all they know how to do. The last name Patel is very common among the Businessman class. Shocker I know.

Being in the engineering side of things I work with a lot of these folks. In the US you will see a lot of Businessman class folks breaking the glass ceiling and becoming Doctors and Engineers. Which in India are mostly limited to the Brahmin class of folks.

There are exceptions to all of that, but that's basically how and why it works that way.

It would be like a bunch of American plumbers moving to Australia and becoming plumbers over there, and all the Australians would be asking, "Why so many American plumbers here, is that all they know how to do?"

They’re not worried about making money. They have it when they started.

I’ve always heard Indians get tax free $ for 7 years and then they give/sell it to a family member and do it for another 7.

Government subsidies in action is what you’re seeing
Go open a convenience store and ask for government help and see what happens

What Irish guy said and this right here.

They do not care if one hotel or convenience store does not make money or if a bunch of them do not make money, they only care about breaking even across all of them as a group. The Chinese and Mexicans do the same with their restaurant chain stores. (If you dont think they are chains then why do they all have the same food and same menu).

The difference is that with the Indians its a very large family business. If Uncle Rajesh can't make a store work then Cousin Rajesh and his 5 children can make it work. So Cousin Rajesh and his family come over from India and do their thing. The Caste gets their cut which gets evenly distributed across the other stores and hotels to keep everybody just barely on the black side of the profit line. Low profit margin = low tax burden = less government interference = more freedom. In India, the government only meddles with businesses (just like here), when they start making big money. If one guys's little gas station only makes a profit of $10k a year, the government overlooks it, but the larger family is making big money and none of them are going hungry.

I have an Indian “friend” that owns and runs a convenience store. Either he or a combination of he and his wife are there everyday from appx 6:45 am to 9:15 pm. Personally I don’t have anyone in my inner circle who would be willing to keep that schedule even if they did have the financing.

There are a few around here. I avoid doing buissness with them There don't put prices on anything. I'm not wasting my time asking for a price. The one time I bought from them they were higher the heck.

They have to live at their business and Americans won't do that. When I was young in the early 60s the owners lived at on next to these small stores.

When you marry one you scratch the red dot off to see if you’ve won a gas station or a hotel.

My community has about 5 convenience stores. Over the past 10 years they have all been bought by Indian's. They can take a store run by an American that's making $50k a month and turn it into $100k a month. For some reason American's are unwilling to invest in their business like India's do. The local American oil company owns maybe 6 stores around the county and they are all shucks.. pure garbage. The indian stores are all remodeled and clean. Lately they have been adding package stores to the sides to bring in even more money.

Indian's know how to run convience stores better than American's. Well except Buckees, but the average local American owner is never there, they just want to go play golf and drink whiskey. Working the store from 4 - 9pm daily is not the life they want.

If you are willing to work it yourself, you can save more than just the payroll. In an industry with relatively tight profit margins, this is THE difference maker.

I disagree. They work harder than American owners. That's why they are successful.

I refuse to process credit cards for them. Not exaggerating when I say they aren't happy unless they believe you are losing money. I understand tough negotiating but I'm not trying to take advantage of anyone and I'm not going to be taken advantage of. I'd rather deal with any other ethnicity before I'd deal with Indian, Pakistani or Afghans. Patel was simply a surname that meant Village Leader and later became common with shop owners and retailers.

I won't argue with you about their hard work. Nothing to argue. But I also have met quite a few as clients and have discussed those very loans and grants and they most certainly do exist. That leg up over the average American is why there is a difference in success.
