I guess because I really don’t like my shoulder, I decided to work up a load for the 35 Whelen. Looks like 64grs of CFE223 under a 250gr interlock fit the bill. Yes I was angry I pulled the last shot. I only thought it kicked with the 200gr factory loads!! This is at 100yds shooting off the bench. [Linked Image]

Good shooting, looks like you got it dialed in good. I love my 35 whelen, only need one shot.

CVA Scouts are the best bargain in a rifle if you like single shots (I do). I want one in 357 to make a Maximum out of but they don't exist. marshmud, that's some pretty snazzy shooting you are doing there. The Whelen will let you know it when you torch off the 250's. I made up a 358 Norma on a tang safety 77 and it was pretty good but it never shot like that little rifle of yours.

Marsh, the roll your own bug appears to have bitten you good.

Fine shooting with that Whelen.

Mrs. Marsh always hates when I take on new adventures. I tend to jump into them head first and always striving learn as much as I possibly can. Not to mention it’s very relaxing and rewarding at the same time.

AU338MAG helped me get started a few years ago. There is always lots to learn! It satisfies that meticulous nature in me. It’s extremely relaxing as well!!

I am but a neophyte compared to the load masters on this site but I will say, I have learned a lot since I started! I have also hoarded a ton of stuff!!!!!!! I’m pretty set now. But still acquiring!! Love the work you have done with that .35! Always found that a very intriguing and usable cartridge!

dam good shooting on your part the rifle won't do that on it's own no matter how accurate.

with 250's better shoot the shoulder and smash some bone grin

Speaking from experience, the 250 s will do a number on both the deer's and your shoulder.

Especially if your Whelen has a steel butt plate like mine. eek

It willsmash the heck out of my shoulder. Good Grief I hope it’s like every other rifle I’ve shot. They don’t or I don’t feel the recoil when shooting at an animal.

Elmer Keith always said he didn't think whatever you decided to carry had reached it's potential unless it hurt on both ends.

Words of wisdom right there. He was a Whelen guy.

He would be proud because I’ve reached it!!! That thing sure packs a punch!! Hopefully these loads will get tested in 2 weeks on our annual Axis/turkey hunt in Sonora.

Devil's Advocate...

Author is Mr. Jack O'Connor: from a piece he wrote on the 7x57 in 1974. Just replace 7x57 with any modest non-magnum cartridge and there you have it.

"I think I have seen more game killed with fewer shots from this modest little cartridge than with any other. The explanation for its deadly efficiency does not lie in blinding velocity, in big bullets, in a frightening number of foot pounds of energy. It lies in the light recoil, coupled with the excellent hunting accuracy of so many 7×57s. Those who use it are not afraid of it and, as a consequence, they tend to shoot it well—and to place their shots well. In case no one has told you, the most important factor in killing power is putting that bullet in the right spot."

Jack O’Conner forgot that some of us aren’t pussies and can actually take heavy recoil and not flinch. Guess that makes me unique???
