X2. I had almost rather stay at home than to tote a 24” or longer barrel. My 21” barreled 20ga 870 gets over 300 pellets in a 10” circle at 40 yards and my 20ga 1187 gets 350 pellets. 👍.

I had a gun built way back before there were short bbled turkey guns or screw in chokes by a guy that was the gunsmith for the US Olympic trap team. He took a new 30" 870 bbl and cut it 1 inch at a time and chronoed 3" turkey loads, then cut it another inch and chroned. He found little significant velocity loss until he reached 25". He tapped a 25" bbl for me and the first ever short bbled turkey gun with a screw in choke was born. He later sold the patent to Winchester and the Win Choke was born. I still have that bbl and hunt with it.

24" on my 20 gauge Benelli M2. So far I've always been able to use the factory fiber sights effectively, despite the fact my eyes are pretty bad. I bought a 28" barrel for it to use for a duck gun, since 24" is too short in a blind with one or two other guys.

The 870 youth 20 with a 21 in barrel is like a toy compared to my Winchester SXP 12 gauge 3.5 with a 24 in barrel.
So much so I passed up a shot with the 20 on a gobbler strutting because I felt he was a little to far away, but would have hammered him with the 12. No sense in knocking the lil 21in barrel youth guns because they are stone cold killers. With the right choke and payload they’ll kill a turkey way further than any ethical turkey hunter should be shooting at ‘em

Some of the tightest longer range patterns I've seen out of any gun.

my 870 youth compact has the 18.5" which I love for maneuvering in the woods but I think the 21 is the perfect length for patterning. that being said the one I have is a killer out to 55-60 yds which is plenty plus some.

If I was buying/building a dedicated turkey gun, I'd opt for 21-22"....with that said my Winchester 1300 is 24" and shortening it by 3" isn't worth the cost to have it cut down/rethreaded. My Stoeger 3020 is 26" but it doubles as my dove gun so I'm gonna leave it as-is. I keep threatening to put a shorter barrel and youth stock on it for turkey season, but by the time I did that, I could just about buy a whole separate gun
