Was able to take my biggest gobbler this past Saturday morning. Went into the woods with my uncle and little brother and had one gobble at daylight just a couple times. My brother and I went after him while my uncle went to try to find another that wanted to play. After he gobbled 3 or 4 times at an owl hoot, he never said another word. Set up on the creek a little ways down from where we thought he was and just called here and there throughout the morning. Had a deer wind us and blow several times around 8, so we really weren't feeling great about it at that point. But we hung out for a while just in case. About 9 or so I sent my uncle a message saying we were gonna regroup and try to find another one. While we were getting our stuff together, I heard my brother saying there he is! I cut my eyes over and he was in full strut about 60 or so yards away down the creek. He was drumming but still never gobbled again. After a minute I noticed more with him. There were 3 hens and at least one more gobbler. We had our facemasks pulled up and were in the middle of getting our stuff put up to leave, but somehow managed to get our masks back on and set back up without them seeing us. We were going to try to double up, but once he got to about 35 yards or so he acted like he saw us, and I heard my brother whispering "don't worry about me, just shoot him". I shot and he hit the dirt. I made my way over to him and put my foot on his neck till he expired, the whole time with him flopping and going nuts. The first thing I noticed were the set of hooks he had on him- each one 1-1/2"!! I felt kinda guilty that my brother didn't get a chance also that morning, but he assured me that he was every bit as happy as I was. This was the first time I've been able to go in two years, and the first time I'd been back to Pine Apple since my grandfather passed away a few weeks ago. The Lord blessed us with an unforgettable hunt, and I'm sure my grandad was watching from his new home. God is good! Still not sure how to post pics on here, but if someone wants to text me and post for me, my name is Nick and number is 2517517019.
