I was visiting with my buddy that has the local rifle range here this morning. I asked him what he does with all the brass from the range. He told me he stores it in his shed and when the price is right he brings it to the scrap yard. He then offered me all the brass I want for $1/lb. I know most if not all brass is picked up daily and is kept clean and dry. Other then them not being fired in my rifles, is there any concerns I should have with this brass over new brass? My plan is to stockpile enough brass for the calibers I need and pass the others off to whom ever needs them. Deal or no deal?

I don't like to mix brass. If it's 223/5.56 brass its not a big deal. But different brands of brass can differ significantly in wall thickness and weight. What may be a safe load in one brand may be over pressure in another. For example, I recently weighed 2 different brands of 280 AI brass and the Nosler brass averaged about 25 gr heavier than Hornady brass.

If you load for pistol or blasting ammo for your ARs range brass is fine if you load for accuracy I'd stick to new brass or if you do use range brass like Mr 338mag says stick with the same head stamp and thoroughly inspect it before loading it.
Keep your booger hooker off the bang switch.

That’s the plan. Norma is a very popular ammo around here and my buddy’s range is just for sighting and checking scopes so 99% of rounds fired goes right in the buckets. My plan is to go through and only pull the best brass and sort by caliber and brand. I’m hoping to get enough quality brass like Norma and Hornady to have on reserve just in case. I have a pretty good supply of new brass and I’m adding to that supply as I find it. I figure for $1/lb it would at least keep me busy for a while. If it’s not what I want, well I’ve wasted money on worse things.

Personally, I won’t fool with range brass. I just stick with what I purchase new.
