smart man longspur. Rather than letting him know where you are, the best thing to do is slip out of the tree before he see's you and put a stalk on him. Once you have the drop on him, then you confront him and hold him until the law arrives. Never confront a poacher from a treestand unless you have someone else on the ground that you trust within sight of him and you have your scope on him and are fully prepared to pull the trigger. Some people take their poaching seriously and probably half already have a criminal record of some sort so you've got to be real careful cause you dont know who you're dealing with. good post

No closed season, no limit in possession and no size limit. You can also use bait and the aid of an artificial light.

I don't think I would have let him know where I was if I were 30 foot up a tree. Never know what someone will do nowadays.

He'd just as likely shoot at movement rather than knowing what he's aiming at. If the game warden or sheriff cant get there, then you're left with having to deal with your own problems or simply doing nothing at all. If your gonna deal with this guy, in my opinion, that's the best way to handle it. It's damn sure safer than hollering at him while perched on the side of a tree. I may be different than others but nobody is going to come on my private posted property and hunt it while I sit there and watch. I dont care who they are. You know where he is standing and he doesnt know you're anywhere around? If you cant figure out a way to get the drop on him and hold him til the law arrives, you dont need to be carrying a gun in the woods.

I'll agree about not starting something 30' up, but we'll have to agree to disagree on sneaking up on a poacher and trusting that he doesn't shoot into the bushes I'm standing behind.
No thank you. My life is more important that my bravado.

We can agree that letting him know you're sitting 30" up the tree watching him is not a good thing to do. I fully understand your response but look at it from this perspective. If I didnt address it on the spot, I would personally be much more worried about hunting the place again knowing that the same yahoo might be watching me or my sons through his scope every time we go in and out to hunt or he and I might stumble up on each other in the dark. If he's brazen enough to walk up and glass a cutover on privately owned property while standing in street clothes in the wide open, you can be rest assured he's familiar with the place and has hunted it before. If know I'm going to have to deal with someone again in the future, I'd rather deal with him on my terms and timing. Better to get it over with when I know I have the advantage rather than the other way around. Hince my first response.

X2 I hope some of the billy badasses on here never actually have to deal with a poacher. If they do, I have a feeling our Aldeer cemetery (or whatever the suggestion was) will have some new members.

I totally understand your rage. Aint nuthin makes me madder than a dang poacher. I guess in hindsight, I my would have called the law immediately and just sit there and watched, as bad as I would hate to.

I'm with you fatty..I wasn't about to stalk hunt a damn boy with a gun.I know a few that will shoot in the bushes if the leaves move they so scared. The thought of him shooting at me never crossed my mind.I was watching him through the binos.I tell you this...If that gun woulda come off his shoulder that sumbitch better be ready to hit a moving target cause my ass woulda been bobbing and weaving.I have never had to deal with a poacher so I didn't really know what to do other than let my presence be known and I figured it would scare him enough to get the hell outta there. The GW called me earlier and I think they gonna go to the house I think he come from and have a talk with em.Maybe he won't be back..but if he does come back I'm gonna go crazy redneck on his ass. How far of a drive is that from Mobile? I like playing crazy redneck.

Next time call the state trooper or sheriff's office and tell them you have spotted someone in the woods carrying a weapon and looks like he is up to no good. Don't mention hunting. Tell them you fear for your life with this crazy s.o.b. roaming around in the area. I bet they would come faster then the warden. They will straightened him out right quick like.

do not have the GW "talk to him"..have his ass arrested PERIOD. Otherwise he just got away with it and we already know he has a bad attitude...he will be back.
best way, be quiet, climb down and ease up on the sob after calling the GW AND the SO...say both of ya'll are armed. I've confronted and unarmed a bunch of poachers when off duty. Only had one balk at the unarming and the 870 I had persuaded him to put his gun down. Don't confront an armed poacher unless you understand the risks and are willing to follow thru...thats what they pay GWs and Deputies for...
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....
