Hey guys....I am not very mechanically inclined, so I will be blunt with my questions. A close buddy of mine has a 2002 Polaris Sportsman 700 that he got a few years back from a guy who was in a real pinch. He got a great deal on it. He hasn't rode it hardly at all sine he bought it, and said if I wanted it, he would sell it for what I thought was fair. Went and picked it up today to give it a good look over and have a neighbor check it out as well (who is fairly mechanically inclined). We checked the oil in it, and I had a kind of a weird green tint. It looked like it could be oil mixed with antifreeze, but there was no odd smell. There was nothing in the coolant reservoir though. Could this be a busted head? Something else? It has been sitting for about a year without being cranked.

Have you cranked it since you picked it up? If not, I'd change the oil and top off the coolant. Check for antifreeze on the oil plug when you pull it. Crank it. If it knocks, take it back. If not be careful. Could be a head gasket. Usually antifreeze/water in oil will appear milky but it depends on how long it has been sitting. I've seen old oil or grease mixed with water appear to have a green slimy look also. Run the engine to warm it up and allow the new oil to mix with sludge that was left in the engine. Listen for knocking again. I think if you remove the thermostat and radiator cap you can look in the radiator, if you see bubbles its possibly a head gasket. Good luck.

What kind of oil should I use? Weight?

If the antifreeze is in the crankcase and the motor has not been ran, it would not be mixed in with the oil (oil and water don't mix)giving it a green tint.
If antifreeze/water is in the crankcase and it has been ran it would look like a frothy milkshake.

We had cranked it up and was letting it run. He started really revving it up, so I told him to stop because the oil hadn't been checked in a while. I just got off the phone with the owner, and he said he never changed the oil. He didn't run it enough to feel the need he said.

I am wondering if this is some kind of synthetic oil. I have read where it has a green tint to it.

Thinking about what I said and the other guys said, you have a lot of variables/unknowns acquiring it the way you did. Change the oil and check or top off other fluids and see what happens. Google your model for the correct oil if you don't have a dealer nearby. I think its 0W40 synthetic or Polaris branded oil.

I guess I should order since there isn't s dealer nearby? I wonder if an oil from Oreilys would work. I will probably have to order a filter for sure.

I have that same ATV, I like mine pretty well. Some of the synthetic oils do have a green tint. I usually get oil & filter at Wally World, Fram PH6014A, Mobil-1 0-40W Synthetic. Supertech 7317 fits too.
