Any of you guys have any experience or tips hunting Montana? Headed to the southeastern part of MT with a couple buddies to hunt public land. We’re going in blind, so any pointers would be appreciated. TIA

You can get a lot closer to western birds than you can Easterns in the south. As long as you go in there early you can literally get right under them. If you try to set up on them from 150 yards away that is going to be an exercise in frustration because they normally hit the ground and go. So my best advice is to get there early and get super close to them.

This. give them too much room and it’s rough. Like he said those bids hit the ground running literally.

My oldest son is making his way back from there now. He said exactly what the guys above stated. If you lay back and play hard to get like you might would here, you’ll be chasing them all day. He said they’d actually fly ridge to ridge throughout the day instead of walking the canyons. The ones they killed liked lots of calling, but he said you had to get within a certain bubble for them to show much interest at all. Outside of that bubble, they’d answer you, but keep on walking the other way.

I’m sitting at the airport now, headed up that way. Not sure where I’ll be, headed to several states hopefully. Shoot me a pm with your number.

I hunted southern Montana/ northern Wyoming years ago. I called several across canyons. Best all I ever saw out of a turkey.

I am flying out tomorrow having been out west for 7 days. I killed birds in Montana but they were in the NW corner. If you make it up that way shoot me a pm and I’ll try to help.
